 With the close of 2019, the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance feels it is important to look back and reflect on the key action items and impacts from the past year.

Rader, Matthews, Patoka join Boyne Chamber board
The Boyne Area Chamber is adding three local business leaders to the board of directors for the new year. They will be installed at the Annual Awards Gala on January 16th.
 MATT RADER says he "had the great fortune of being born and raised in Boyne City."
Growing up, he fell in love with the multitude of activities and amenities in Northern Michigan. It is because of these opportunities that he and his wife Kelly have chosen to raise their three children in the area. If three kids were not enough, the two also own a restaurant, Bella Vita, a name chosen because it translates to "Beautiful Life."
A passion for skiing and snowboarding led Matt to employment with Boyne Resort as a teen. After a "ski bum" season in Big Sky, then attending Northern Michigan University, he returned to Boyne Mountain and was offered a position with Boyne Realty, where he began his career as a Realtor. Matt recently brought his 14+ years of resort/vacation real estate sales and development expertise to Pat O'Brien & Associates.
 LACEY MATTHEWS
is the Communications and Marketing manager for Great Lakes Energy, the largest electrical cooperative in the state of Michigan, based in Boyne City. Lacey is a native of Antrim County, growing up on a sheep farm on the south end of Torch Lake.
She directed marketing for an electrical utility in Houston for four years before moving back home in 2017. Lacey is the proud parent of her two kids, Isthmia and August, and proud dog mom to her Great Dane, Beau. She enjoys snowboarding, boating, traveling, horseback riding, reading, and being a hockey mom.
 PATRICK PATOKA is the Waterpark & Adventure Center Director at Boyne Mountain Resort. Originally from Wisconsin, Patrick has been a resident of the Boyne area for 12 years. His wife Jessica is the Playcare Children's Center Director, also at Boyne Mountain Resort. Together they have a 3-year-old son, David, and an English Bulldog, Bauer. Patrick and his family are outdoor enthusiasts who love camping, kayaking, golfing and skiing. Patrick is also an avid hunter, fisherman and home brewer.

'Off the Clock' schedule announced for the new year
The Boyne Area Chamber has announced the 2020 schedule for "Off The Clock," our new name for Business After Hours. This is the Chamber's monthly business networking event, held at member businesses. The first one of the year, as always, is the Annual Awards Gala at Boyne Mountain Resort on Thursday, January 16th. Except for the Awards Gala and the Regional Business After hours, there is no charge for admission or refreshments. Chamber members and the general public are welcome to attend. Bear River Health hosts Lions legend for addiction discussion
 Luncheon is Jan. 25 at NC Michigan College
Bear River Health of Walloon Lake is organizing a Sports Impact Luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 25, featuring a discussion with Detroit Lions legend Herman Moore on how addiction affects us all. The luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Central Michigan College Student and Community Center, 1525 Howard St., Petoskey. A private VIP Reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Boyne Mountain Resort. The luncheon is described as a "session of food, football, and inspiration, in partnership with the NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter. This interactive panel discussion spotlights Detroit Lions Legend Herman Moore and other former NFL Players as they share their experiences of overcoming obstacles while in the NFL and ordinary everyday life." Proceeds will go to community organizations dedicated to serving those affected by the opioid addiction crisis. Local high schools will be getting about 100 free tickets per school.

McLaren named Top 50 Heart Hospital 3rd year in a row
 For a third year in a row, McLaren Northern Michigan was named one of the nation's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by IBM Watson HealthTM. McLaren Northern Michigan was one of only two Michigan hospitals to receive this award and is the only Northern Michigan hospital recipient.
The Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study scores hospitals in key clinical and operational performance areas including mortality, complications, and re-admissions. McLaren Northern Michigan excelled in clinical outcomes for heart attack and heart failure treatments, as well as open heart and angioplasty surgeries, compared to hospitals nationwide. On average, patients spent less on procedures and had shorter hospital stays. This is the fourth time McLaren Northern Michigan has been recognized with this award since it began in 1998.
"Our cardiac team sets the standard for heart care in northern Michigan and beyond. We are focused on bringing the latest advancements to you; our patients. For example, McLaren is the first hospital in northern Michigan to have cardiovascular robotic system capabilities," stated Todd Burch, hospital president and CEO.

Foundation hosts info meeting for non-profits on Jan. 29th
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation will host an informational meetings for non-profits at Boyne City Hall at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 29th. This session will consist of a brief presentation by C3F staff about the new grant cycles in general, and then will be mostly driven by questions from our non-profit partners. If you are writing a grant for your organization this year or if you have an idea about a grant, even if you've been submitting grants for years with C3F, we encourage you to attend one of these sessions to learn about the changes and get your questions answered. We look forward to working with you and helping to answer your questions about the new grant cycles.
United Way invites letters of intent for 2020 grants
 Char-Em United Way's 2020 community investment process is underway with a call for letters of intent to apply. Letters of intent may be submitted online at:
www.ceuw.org/loi. Letters of intent will be reviewed and invitations to apply for a grant will be emailed early February. Grant applications will be reviewed by a Citizens Review Panel in mid-April. If you are interested in participating as a panelist to help our board determine funding allocations, please email [email protected].

Rotary plans monthly open meeting Monday at Cafe Sante
 The Boyne City Rotary Club will hold an "open meeting" at 6 p.m. Monday, January 20, at Cafe Sante. The public is invited to attend and learn how Rotary contributes to the Boyne community and how our service projects benefit people around the world. This meeting will take the place of the usual weekly meeting held at 7 a.m. on the first, second and fourth Mondays of the month at the Boyne District Library Community Room. The club holds their evening open meeting once a month, on the third Monday, and all future open meetings are slated to be held at Cafe Sante.

Cannabis, census and the blues are luncheon topics in 2020
 North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture series for the winter semester will begin on Friday, January 17. A variety of topics will be featured, including the chemistry of cannabis, the 2020 census, blues music, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, redistricting, trash and where it goes, and Beethoven. All programs will be held on Fridays in the College Library Conference Center. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon.
January 17 - The Chemistry of Cannabis. Lake Superior State University's new cannabis chemistry program is the first academic degree program in the nation focusing on the quantitative analysis of cannabis-related compounds, including THC and CBD. Professors Benjamin Southwell and Steven Johnson will explain their program, the career potential for graduates, and the possible positive impact their program could have on the economy of the eastern Upper Peninsula.

Ski free at Boyne on Community Appreciation Day this Sunday
 In appreciation of local patronage and support of their resorts and operations, Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands are offering a full day of free, all-access skiing and snowboarding to area residents on Sunday, January 12th. This offer is for residents of Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, and Otsego counties. Those residents can show their driver's license or other form of identification with proof of residency at the resorts' lift ticket windows to receive a free lift ticket for the day.

Stiggs Brewery to host Pint and Paint tonight, Thursday
Stiggs Brewery's next Pint and Paint party is scheduled for Thursday, January 9th from 6-9 p.m. in the basement of the brewery. Instruction will be the "Art of Mandala Drawing," using simple tools to create beautiful designs and patterns. Lexie Brummeler will walk you through the process of painting a beautiful mandala on a stone and Sue Metzger help you create a wonderful mandala on canvas. You will be able to take home two beautiful pieces of art. All materials will be provided and registration includes a drink of your choice for $25. Fat & Flurrious Bike Race is part of Shorts series on Saturday
The third annual Fat & Flurrious Bike Race returns for 2020 on Saturday, January 11th with a new partner. This will be the first race in the Short's Brewing Fat Bike Series. Fat & Flurrious is a winter fat bike race that starts in front of Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen in downtown Boyne City and flows around the groomed single-track and hiking trails at Avalanche Mountain. Just like previous years, the course is condition-dependent. Bad snow = shorter course, great snow = longer course. The Open category, which will be two loops around Avalanche, will finish between 1.5-2.5 hours. The Sport Category will ride only one lap and will finish between 50 -90 minutes. Only the Open Category counts towards Shorts' overall points. The event is also a fundraiser for Top Of Michigan Mountain Bike Association to build new mountain bike trails. Register here.

Stay fit this winter by swimming at the Charlevoix Pool
A great way to stay fit over the winter is to swim at the Charlevoix Area Community Pool. The pool has many open swim times on Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday, which is when kids and families can play in the pool. Enjoy special open swim rates on Wednesday from 6-8 pm ($1 or $1.50 rate pp). Drop-in pool lap swim or open swim fees range from $5 to $2.50, depending on age and home address. Freshwater Concert Venue has announced four performers who will be featured in concerts in the new year. They include:
- The David Mayfield Parade Americana/bluegrass band on January 18th.
- Chastity Brown on Feb. 14.

- Eliza Gilkyson on May 9.

David Mayfield may be one of the most original performers on the Americana scene, known for his bombastic stage presence as much as his virtuosic guitar talent and songwriting prowess. Those who have seen Mayfield perform with The Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, Jessica Lea Mayfield, or at Bonnaroo, have caught the charisma, the heart, and the comedy, and it's likely you'll come back for more.
This singer-songwriter, band leader, and Grammy nominated producer stepped out of the sideman shadows with his 2011 album, "The David Mayfield Parade." His follow-up, "Good Man Down," was self-released and funded with a surprising successful Kickstarter campaign that more than doubled its initial goal of $18,000. On the heels of that success, Mayfield has partnered with Compass Records, a label that Playboy Magazine calls "Nashville's hippest alternative label." Senior Centers extend lunch hours: Any time from 11:30 to 12:30
We are excited to share new dining hours for Charlevoix County Senior Centers to better accommodate all the busy schedules and to provide a true lunch hour experience. All lunchtime meals will be available from 11:30am until 12:30pm. If you are already coming to the centers for your meals, you can still eat when you want to along with those you normally eat with. The Pledge of Allegiance and grace will still be said at Noon. The extended hours are meant to encourage those not currently coming for lunch due to scheduling conflicts to make it easier to participate. These hours also give our regulars a bit of flexibility and free up some seating.

 Comfort Keepers is now offering fresh meals, delivered to your front door. Meals are prepared using quality ingredients to meet a variety of dietary needs. All meals are chef-prepared on the North Central Michigan College campus. Camp Daggett offers Father and Son Weekend Feb. 7-9
Camp Daggett is accepting registrations for its annual Father and Son Weekend, Friday - Sunday, February 7-9. Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers or big brothers are invited to bring their sons (ages 7-14) for this fun-filled weekend at Camp.
Activities begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and close at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Cost is $200 for father/son, plus $50 for each additional family member. Space is limited and registration is on a first come first served basis. Participants can expect a weekend of fun and adventure as they try their hands at various outdoor activities and enjoy wild game lunches and dinners in front of the lodge fireplace.

Camp Daggett summer camp registration opens
 Registration is now open for Camp Daggett summer camp. Applications for 2020 summer camp have been mailed to 2019 summer campers and 2019 wait-listed campers. Applications have also been delivered to local school offices, the Boyne Area Chamber office, and finally the application will be available on the website for download on January 13. Once the registration form for 2020 is available on the website, to register you must download the form and print it, complete it and mail it as soon as possible.
All applications must be mailed. Campers will receive confirmation letters approximately 2-4 weeks after we get the application. If a session is full, we will call promptly to discuss another week or wait list. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must include payment.

Top Five Astronomy Stories of 2019'
 Northern Michigan Astronomy Club will discuss "The Top Five Astronomy Stories of 2019" at the Wildwood Observatory, located one mile north of Boyne City at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, January 9, at 1825 Wildwood Heights Road. Major advances in our understanding of the cosmos occurred in 2019. Telescopes will be set up for observing after the presentation, weather permitting. The Wildwood Observatory is a small private observatory built by Rod and Michelle Cortright. It is used for observing and astrophotography. The club was formed in 2011 to promote interest in astronomy in the Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet County area. All are welcome.  Loanable Nature Backpack Program is a fun free resource from Conservation District
A fun free resource for this time of year is the Loanable Nature Pack from the Charlevoix Conservation District. Created with the help of Thrivent Charitable Group and local resident Susan Vrondran, this resource is available to loan from the district's office in Boyne City any time of year. Get out and explore the many natural areas Charlevoix County has to offer; we have trail maps too. A pair of Tubbs snowshoes and walking sticks (to reduce stress on the knees) can be loaned out together or separately. The backpack has fun survival and exploration items to enhance your outing.
