STATE ADDS $8.8 MILLION IN ARTS FUNDING FOR 2019
Six years of increased General Fund allocations for the arts in California followed 12 straight years of only $1 million being allocated to the state arts agency.
Yesterday, Governor Jerry Brown signed the 2019 fiscal year state budget, which includes a  one-time $8.8 million increase in funding for the California Arts Council, raising the General Fund portion of its budget to $24 million, and overall budget to $27.5 million (including its National Endowment for the Arts bloc grant and funds from the Arts License Plate and Arts Education tax donation check box). "This will significantly help advance the arts in our state and in our own community," according to Rick Stein, ArtsOC's President & CEO, immediate past president of California Arts Advocates which led the effort to secure additional funding. "We are grateful to the Governor and our legislators on both sides of the aisle who recognize the great value of arts and creativity to the quality of life and livelihood of our state's citizens." The augmented funding does not yet place California in the top tier of state arts funding around the nation on a per capita basis and it remains short of the $32 million the California Arts Council received at its peak in 2001. In 2017-18, eleven grants to nine organizations were granted in Orange County by California Arts Council. "Arts Orange County is determined to persuade more organizations to apply during the coming year's funding cycle, and to assist them in applying through sponsorship of a grants workshop in the fall," added Stein. Information about the current grant programs, eligibility requirements, and more may be found here.
