Greetings,
It was wonderful to get together with fellow SLA members at the Saskatoon Summer Social. We enjoyed another small gathering at Amigo's. Thanks to those who came on August 22. It was great to connect with people from a couple of different library environments.
The Board met at St. Peter's College for our annual Retreat that focused on preparation for the coming year. We held a short board meeting to deal with the business of the organization and then headed into a day and a half of strategic

planning. The time together as a board was fruitful, rejuvenating, and exciting, as we made remarkable initial strides toward the development of our new strategic plan. It is a privilege to gather at St. Peter's in a relaxed atmosphere that allowed for not only restoration but also focused, undistracted concentration on organizational planning for the coming year and beyond.
All the best as you prepare for the September onslaught of a new school year, program planning, and service delivery!

International Literacy Day - A Conversation about Literacy and Skills Development

To coincide with International Literacy Day each year, the Regina Public Library hosts an event to draw attention to the work being done in our community to support literacy and lifelong learning.

In partnership with the University of Regina, this year's event, entitled "International Literacy Day - A Conversation about Literacy and Skills Development," features a conversation between Regina Public Library Director and CEO Jeff Barber and the University's new Dean of Education, Dr. Jerome Cranston. Hosted by local author Ed Willett, the casual conversation will focus on how institutions like universities and libraries are approaching literacy in an increasingly digital world.

The event will conclude with a reading by Ed Willett from his latest book as well as a musical performance by Ava Wild. A catered reception will follow.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

Marcelin Public Library Celebrates 50 Years and New Facility Expansion
June was celebration month at the Marcelin Public Library as it observed both its 50th anniversary and the opening of a newly renovated facility expansion.
Opened in the spring of 1968, the library was established in space added on to the Marcelin Town Office building to specifically accommodate the library. The Town Office recently moved to a new location, and reallocated its portion of the building to the library, more than doubling available space. The new space houses an expanded children's section, with activity tables and a cozy reading nook.
Marcelin and Wapiti celebrated the official anniversary and expansion grand opening on June 21, 2018. Members of the Wapiti Regional Office team, including Regional Director Tony Murphy, joined in the festivities and visited with local library board members and library patrons while exploring the new space.
Marcelin Library board members and staff prepared and served an outdoor supper complete with celebratory cake and ice cream.
Patrons and staff alike are excited about the expansion that will enhance and uphold the library's long tradition of providing services to the community and surrounding area.

The Canadian Museum of History is currently inviting members of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities to contribute their stories and oral histories to an upcoming exhibition about the international experiences of Indigenous peoples.
Indigenous Stories Beyond Borders (the exhibition's working title) will highlight the perspectives of groups and individuals that have travelled the world as diplomats, warriors/soldiers, performers, artists, scholars and athletes, over many centuries.
They are seeking the help of individuals and organizations in reachingout to members of the community who would be willing to share their story for possible inclusion in the exhibition.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community.  Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download  in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
