Class of 2019 Shine
“Instruction ends in the schoolroom, but education ends only with life.”

   Frederick W. Robertson, English novelist

This spring, Jurupa Unified proudly graduates over 1,320 students, the culmination of years of academic progress. This moment is a testament to the strength, determination and attention to craft shown by hundreds of students – along with their parents, families, teachers, staff and administrators – at every school.

The graduates have diverse backgrounds, goals and dreams, but Jurupa schools have helped equip each and every student to learn without limits for a lifetime.

Now, as the Class of 2019 moves on to college, careers and achievements yet unknown, the graduates earn praise for building academic, personal and extracurricular strengths that will serve them well in the journey ahead.

Flexible Learning Grows
“Do RHS students’ grades correlate with their intelligence? How much does social media negatively impact RHS students?”
These are examples of student-generated research topics in Chloe Arias’ classroom at Rubidoux High School.

Ms. Arias is among the teachers leading Jurupa Unified’s adoption of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a program that emphasizes flexible learning environments and lessons that serve a broad range of student learning styles.

“UDL helps me to co-construct the curriculum with my students instead of me choosing the curriculum for them,” Ms. Arias said.

Seniors of Distinction
Jurupa Unified's Class of 2019 features many high achievers with a diverse range of skills, goals and life journeys.

Graduating seniors districtwide have worked hard, cleared obstacles, and laid a strong foundation for college, careers and life.

To celebrate Jurupa graduates and the graduation season, we decided to hear a little from one student from each JUSD campus who represents Jurupa Unified's commitment to cultivating grit, determination and learning without limits. Read More
Pen Pals in Foreign Land
In the age of the keystroke, pen on paper still makes an impression.

That’s one lesson from a pen-pal program linking students at Pedley Elementary with pupils at Horizon International School in Sendai, Japan.

This academic year, 24 fifth- and sixth-graders at Pedley have swapped letters with elementary-school peers in Sendai, Riverside’s Japanese Sister City.

Student Kindness Honored
First-grader Jordan Thompkins saw one of his classmates sitting alone during group activities at Stone Avenue Elementary.

So Jordan took swift action.

“He approached the girl and invited her to join his group’s activity,” said his teacher at Stone Avenue, Irma Hartsock. “He then stopped his own activity to assist the girl with the task, offering encouragement and kind words. He made her feel included and valued. The smile on her face brought a tear to my eye.”
