First Friday, October 5 in Swarthmore!
Live Music in the Amphitheater
121 Park Avenue, 6-8 pm
The Barrel Fires have been lighting up greater Philly-area stages with catchy original songs since the release of their first, self-titled EP in 2015. A tight four-piece influenced by Wilco and Ryan Adams, The Barrel Fires create original classic rock with soaring guitar harmonies, atmospheric folk-tinged ballads, and everything in between. Come see for yourself as they take the Central Park amphitheater stage from 6-8 pm on First Friday.
In the event of rain, this performance will be cancelled.
Gallery on Park

Featured artist and Swarthmorean Mimi Muhlenberg will have her encaustic work on display for the month of October at Gallery on Park. From 6-8 pm on First Friday, enjoy a wine and cheese opening reception where you can meet Mimi and view her work. This event is free and open to all!
Harvey Oak Mercantile
102 Park Avenue, 6:30 check-in ~ workshop from 7-9:30 pm
Join HOM for a jewelry workshop hosted by PA jewelry artisan, Hattie Weselyk. This workshop will allow each participant to create two pieces of botanical jewelry using porcelain clay and botanical imprints. You can even BYO-Nature to press into your custom jewelry pieces. Refreshments provided (including wine!). Reservations required by Thursday, October 4. Call, email [email protected], or stop in to reserve your spot! $55 per person.
Houseplant Hospital

Houseplant Hospital welcomes back Scott White of Bucks County Bonsai for a special workshop. Cost is $85 for a three-tree tropical forest bonsai creation you will make in the shop under his tutelage. Scott brings a wide assortment of tropical bonsai, along with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
Indigo Healing Arts Collective
110 Park Avenue, 6-7 pm
Explore the "Dark Side of the Moon" with a psychedelic flow inspired by the music of Pink Floyd. No prior yoga experience is necessary. After class, students are encouraged to linger in the apothecary and plant room. Drop rate is $15. Reserve your space via email at [email protected].

On First Friday, Kandy Kids welcomes a special guest, Rachel Johnson, who uses puppets and books to bring animals to life! Hope to see you at 6:30 pm for this wonderful performance.

The Pilates Connexion
15 S. Chester Road, 7-8 pm
Belly dance your way through spinal articulations and deep muscle activation of the abdomen, pelvis, trunk, spine, and neck, working with the body instead of against it. Learn slow, undulating moves as well as fast percussive moves all to the sound of Middle Eastern music. Finish with some short choreography combining the moves learned.
Wear loose comfortable clothing that allows movement. The studio will provide colorful hip scarves to use during the class. No experience necessary. Cost is $15.

Swarthmore CO-OP

Quizzo at the CO-OP is back! Registration is required through their website, and players are encouraged to form teams of 4-6 people. This event is BYOB for participants ages 21+. Lite table snacks will be provided, and the store will be open for a portion of the time for players to purchase snacks and drinks. There is a $5 cash payment fee per player, and a great prize for the winning team!

The "Celebrate Swarthmore Photographers" exhibit is fast approaching. The show will be held at Swarthmore Borough Hall for the month of October. The public is invited to the artists' reception on Friday, October 5 from 6-8 pm, which is free, child friendly, and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
An exhibition of original photography by area photographers from Swarthmore, Rutledge, Wallingford, Nether Providence, and Rose Valley will be on display. The exhibit is sponsored by Swarthmore Friends of the Arts, the community group responsible for the rotating art exhibits at Swarthmore Borough Hall. This Month at the Swarthmore Public Library!
Serve on the Library Board of Trustees
It takes a dedicated community to grow and maintain a quality library. If you would like to dedicate some of your time and energy in this pursuit, consider applying for a seat on the nine member Swarthmore Public Library Board of Trustees.
Trustee positions are for a three year term. Candidates must be residents or taxpayers of the Borough, of voting age, and able to obtain PA Criminal Background and Child Abuse Clearances. The Board typically meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm, except for the meetings in January (fourth Tuesday) and September (first Tuesday). Trustees are expected to serve on at least one committee: Strategic Planning, Personnel, Finance, Development, or Nominating. Visit the website or stop by the Library for an application.

Borrow an eReader
Introducing...a brand new collection! The Library has 24 eReaders pre-loaded with content for adults, teens, and children. These eReaders can be borrowed just like a book for up to 6 weeks. This collection is possible through a grant from the Rotary Club of Swarthmore.
World's Greatest Geological Wonders: 36 Spectacular Sites
Thursdays through December 20, 10 am - 12 pm
Explore some of the world's most spectacular sites in this Great Courses video lecture series. Learn about well-known sites such as the Grand Canyon, Mt. Fuji and the Galapagos Islands, and discover more obscure places such as Erta Ale lava lake, the Great Blue Hole, and many others. This program is made possible through a grant from Swarthmore Borough for Aging in Place services.
In Stitches Yarn and Needlework Club

Do you love to knit, crochet or do needlepoint? SWPL's In Stitches is an informal gathering of enthusiasts of the needlework arts, who meet twice a month to work on their crafts while enjoying lively conversations with fellow members. Drop in anytime and bring along your current project to work on!
