We welcome singer, songwriter and painter, Tom Pirozzoli as this week’s featured artist… and are most grateful that he shared his painting of the snow covered woods... with trees starkly reflected on the brook, on a day such as this, when all is quiet and still, following the storm.

We all know these are strange and surreal times. The fugue-like days affect our health, our livelihoods, our social fabric and our emotional worlds. But we’re in this together and it’s amazing to see our communities band together in support and compassion.
As this is being written, comes a Nor’easter predicted to bring a plentiful snowfall and gale force winds! With luck, by the time you’re reading this, the storm has passed, the sun is shining, roads are cleared, skiers are schussing in the fresh powder on the Mountain, and, fingers crossed… that rascally Pennsylvania rodent, Punxsutawney Phil, could not find his shadow and Spring will soon be here.

Perfectly planned for this winter’s bountiful snowfall, Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust has introduced a “Snowshoe Series” for winter fun and fitness.
Due to the feedback we received from our Earth Day 2020 "Do It Yourself" Hiking Challenge, we have created a winter version for those who enjoy hiking in the winter months. The footwear you choose will be dependent on the weather, of course, but the most important thing is that you get out and explore our winter wonderland!
This winter series covers five trails in five of the towns in our region. On www.ausbonsargent.org look for "Connect With The Land/Trail Series." All the information for the winter series is available here on one sheet. Supplemental maps are included for each hike as well. You'll notice that this new spot on our website is also the home for the Earth Day 2020 hiking challenge information. Any future hiking/snowshoeing series will be kept here for your convenience!

If ‘curling up by the fireside with a book’ is your favorite antidote to weather Winter’s storms… even in a pandemic, the resources are easily found in our community book stores and libraries. Librarians can always suggest the perfect read. This being Black History Month, that’s a good place to start. They also have story times, games and crafts for children of all ages.

Yo, Ho, Ho… the revival of Sea Shanties. Even the Wall Street Journal has taken notice of this inexplicable cultural trend. Traditionally, since the 1800’s “Shanties” were songs sung by sailors to the rhythm of their work aboard merchant ships. In December 2020, Scottish postal worker, Nathan Evans uploaded his version of ”Soon May the Wellerman Come” to Tik Tok and since then, videos with #seashanty tag have racked up more than 3 billion viewers!

He said, “Write it on your heart that everyday is the best day in the year. He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in. Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This new day is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”
Essayist, poet, philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson. 1803~1882
