Spatial Distancing with Warm and Cool Colors

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
It's back to the basics! Most painters know this stuff - but we all need to be reminded once in awhile! Half of the colors on the standard twelve-color color wheel are warm tones and the other half of the color wheel are cool tones.

Colors imply a temperature range. Red, orange, yellow appear warm. Blue, violet and green appear cool. The warm colors appear close, while the cool color seem to recede. This is a good thing to know when painting a believable landscape, interior or still life! In this BobBlast, I further illustrate this point by showing one of my earlier still lives: a table in warm tones (up close) with window scene, showing an abstract landscape in cool tones (far away). The reds are up close and the blues are far away. We painters seem to love playing with the viewer with this illusion and manipulation of spatial distance.

Note: You can also see the color areas have dabs of the "opposing" colors as well. That's because I tend to mingle color together instead of mixing a solid color. I also feel it helps to hold the whole painting together.

As always, these BobBlasts are a short summary of how I paint and are nor intended to suggest a formula for painting. Every painter develops their own way of painting. And mine works for me .
