Announcing the New JCMS Subscription Plan
Dear fellow members of SCMS,

It is my great pleasure to announce that beginning with issue 60.1 (Fall 2020), JCMS will be moving to a new subscription model, facilitated by our recent partnership with Michigan Publishing.

Starting this fall, JCMS will be a digital-forward journal!

What does digital-forward mean?
  • All JCMS content, including “satellite” publications like Archival News and the journal’s archive in Project Muse, will be available on one site: jcmsjournal.org. That site will go live this fall.
  • Every quarter, all SCMS members will receive an email with a Table of Contents for the new issue of JCMS (including formerly “satellite” content). This Table of Contents will include direct links to all of the articles and book reviews, the In Focus dossier, our new Spotlight feature, and other materials.
  • JCMS will soon start publishing a rolling “fifth issue” of open access, online only (OAOO) articles. The OAOO articles will be vetted exactly the same way as all other JCMS articles; we are introducing them in order to expedite the queue from acceptance to publication for authors. OAOO articles will have durable URLs and DOIs, as well as journal issue and page numbers, and they will copyedited, typeset, and proofread by Michigan Publishing, just like the articles in the other four issues—they’ll just come out faster!
  • Authors will be given a choice, upon acceptance, of whether they would prefer their article to be published in an OAOO “fifth issue” or one of the other four issues, which are archived in Project Muse and thus paywalled. (For licensing reasons, it is not possible for an OAOO article to also appear in Project Muse.) The editors of JCMS will be available to advise authors on which choice might be best for them.
  • JCMS will still be available in print. Members will be able to opt-in to receive the print journal when they renew their membership with SCMS. (See more about opting-in below.)

Why is JCMS going digital-forward?
  • Standardizing the cost of SCMS membership is JCMS’s driving motivation for becoming digital-forward; we regard this as an equity issue.
  • International postage has been the reason that SCMS had to charge Canadian and international members significantly more than US members. Starting this summer, SCMS will no longer be charging surcharges to Canadian or international members! See the bottom of this letter for a table of membership rates for 2020-2021. (Canadian and international members who have already renewed for the next membership year will be refunded their surcharges; please email scms-office@ou.edu to request your refund.)

Your membership fees will still go towards the production of the journal, namely to copyediting, typesetting, formatting images and tables, proofreading, necessary software subscriptions, and new outreach and equity initiatives. Members who want to receive the print journal will be able to do so for an additional fee that covers the cost of printing, shipping, and postage only . Those are as follows:
  • US print and delivery fee: $16.00 US per year
  • Canada print and delivery fee: $36.00 US per year
  • International print and delivery fee: $46.00 US per year

The editors of JCMS , particularly Production Editor Scott Richmond, have been working tirelessly with Michigan Publishing to ensure that opt-in issues will be of the same or higher quality those you are used to seeing from the University of Texas Press.

QUESTIONS? The Editor of JCMS will be available for a live question and answer session on Zoom on Wednesday, July 8 from 12:00-1:00PM Eastern Daylight Time. (Meeting ID: 994 4791 6601; Password: 629354. Full Zoom invite below.) You may also email queries to editors@jcmsjournal.org , and we will do our best to answer them as quickly as possible.

Thank you for reading! The editors of JCMS are really excited about this change, and we hope you are too. This was the only way to end surcharges for international members of our Society, and we feel that to be an absolutely crucial step towards improving member equity within SCMS. We hope you agree!

Yours sincerely,

Caetlin Benson-Allott
Editor, JCMS
