Iowa WILPFers, this eAlert is to tell you that the 21 youth plaintiffs in the Juliana v. United States Constitutional climate lawsuit need your help!

The July eNews article, "WILPF US Joins Amicus Brief in Landmark Youth Climate Justice Lawsuit," announced that Earth Democracy and WILPF US are supporting the Juliana v. United States lawsuit, for a climate system capable of sustaining human life. WILPF is signing on to the Our Children's Trust Amicus Brief for the Supreme Court hearing of this suit.

It would be wonderful if Iowa WILPF members, with signs, could attend one of the three still open IOWA AARP candidate fora to ask a climate justice question!  All five fora will be live-streamed at  www.DesMoinesRegister.com . So, please wear your new WILPF US sash or hold up your People and Planet before Profit or WILPF US banner.

Background on Forum Participation

The five AARP Presidential Primary Candidate Forums begin July 15 in Des Moines and end July 20 in Council Bluffs. Below are the details for these Iowa AARP events, part of their 2020 voter education campaign . However NOTE: Although AARP members can get onto the waiting lists, the Des Moines and Davenport fora are already sold out.

We 're asking WILPFers to be part of the voter-education process - and be the "dangerous women" we are! If you can attend one of these fora, please choose a visible and accessible seat and hold up a sign, "Life, liberty, and property free from climate chaos!", so that the moderators will know to call on you for a question.

If you are an AARP member, please go on-line to register (or get onto the waiting list).

If you are not an AARP member and you can commit to attending and asking the climate question, please email your first and last name to Coreal at Our Children's Trust, [email protected] , who will add your name to a list for admission to the forum you wish to attend. When you will go to the registration desk at the event, give your name to get your ticket(s). (This information is for the Cedar Rapids, Sioux City , and Council Bluffs events only.)

At the forum, hold up your sign, and the moderators can call on you for a question Please state you are asking this question on behalf of WILPF.

Here's the issue background to start your question: "Both my grandchild and I are hurt by c limate disruption! The elderly and youth will be the first and most adversely affected by climate breakdown."  Question: "Do you agree that a national science-based climate recovery plan, as sought by the 21 youth plaintiffs in Juliana v. United States, is necessary to mitigate the climate crisis and its effects on both elderly and young Americans?"

Anyone who attends, please take pictures and send them to [email protected]. We'll post your pictures at Earth Democracy and Our Children's Trust may post them on their blog.

The forums start July 15 in Des Moines and conclude July 20 in Council Bluff, e ach begin ning at 2 pm. Since only the Democratic Party has caucuses, only those twenty Democratic presidential candidates who have agreed to participate will be present at these events. E ach candidate has 25 minutes to answer moderator and a udience questions .

The forums are intended for AARP members. Please see "Background" above for further information, including for non-AARP members. If you are an AARP member, you may register/join the waitlist .  Do so quickly, since, as noted, two locations already state that registration for the event is closed; you can be added to the waitlist.

Below are the candidates speaking at each forum, with the date and city. These forums will be open to credentialed media and live -streamed at  www.DesMoinesRegister.com .
