Sherman Street Crossing Weekly Update

Dear Sherman Street Neighbors,

As part of our commitment to keeping you up to date on the latest information about the Sherman Street Quiet Zone we will be sending you a weekly email update. Also, during the week updates are being posted on the website as they are available ( https://www.cambridgema.gov/ShermanStreetCrossing ).

Some of the key updates from this past week are:

  • Construction of the safety improvements required for the quiet zone began on Tuesday, September 4th. Work will continue for at least the next week.

  • Traffic detours on Sherman Street will continue as the median is installed on each side of the railroad crossing. Sherman Street from Walden Street to the railroad crossing will be closed to thru traffic in the northbound direction during daytime construction but will remain open to abutters, local residents, and anyone with a local destination south of the railroad crossing. Pedestrian access across the tracks will be maintained in both directions at all times. Variable message boards and detour signs are in place.

  • The Notice of Establishment for the quiet zone was issued on Friday August 24. The notice indicates the quiet zone will be established on September 15, 2018 at 12:01 am. This reflects the 21day time frame required by Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations for establishing quiet zones.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during construction. We look forward to the implementation of the quiet zone on the 15th.

We will continue to provide additional updates as they become available.
