Where Can I Find You?
Find It @ Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook (LIS) 2021
I was recently writing my editorial piece for our next May 2021 edition of audioXpress - which carries on a longstanding tradition of celebrating all that is great in tube audio - and I once again spent a good amount of time browsing the always fascinating archive of The Audio Amateur (the publishing company), and Old Colony Sound Lab, the audio parts, kits and book catalog, founded by Edward T. Dell Jr. (1923–2013), out of Peterborough, NH.

For those who don't know the story, over the years, Ed Dell built a strong lineup of prime-quality publications addressing the interests of audio DIY and builders, starting with its Audio Amateur quarterly bulletin in 1970 (rebranded as Audio Electronics in 1996), which was later followed by Speaker Builder - The Loudspeaker Journal, Glass Audio (for everything Tubes), Voice Coil - The Periodical for the Loudspeaker Industry, and much later a bold attempt to expand from audio, with Multimedia Manufacturer magazine. With the growing outreach of these publications across the world, Ed Dell decided to launch today's audioXpress title (combining Audio Electronics, Glass Audio, and Speaker Builder in a single, monthly title). This year celebrating our 20th Anniversary!

Meanwhile, Voice Coil magazine started from a conversation between Ed Dell and Vance Dickason, following the publication of the third edition of the Loudspeaker Design Cookbook (now in its 7th edition and heading for the 8th). Ed Dell came up with the name, and Voice Coil was launched in 1987 as a monthly four-page newsletter. The connection with the global loudspeaker industry quickly expanded, also thanks to the notable list of contributors, many of whom remain true industry icons.

The first edition of Glass Audio magazine, published in 1989, included the "World Directory of Tube Electronics Manufacturers," a listing of 57 brands, including many small and relatively new names from all over the world, signaling the tube audio electronics revival taking place at that time (read about it in audioXpress May 2021, out April 12). This would later inspire Ed Dell to also publish the Tube World Directory (WTD) in 1993, an annual publication with all the resources for the tube audio enthusiasts, builders, and manufacturers.

In the 1990s, The Audio Amateur publishing company increased its focus on the global audio industry, thanks in great part to Vance Dickason - who in 1995 had been instrumental in converting Voice Coil magazine to a monthly publication with 20 pages of four-color printing (Voice Coil currently offers 30 to 40 pages plus cover each month and is available in print or digital). Subsequently, in 1997, Ed Dell also launched another annual publication, titled Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook (LIS).
The original 1997 edition of the Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook superimposed over the digital flipbook version of the current digital edition.
LIS was the first annual loudspeaker industry resource, providing a comprehensive guide of manufacturers and their products and services. As Ed Dell wrote in his first edition of LIS, "As publishers of Speaker Builder, Voice Coil, and other audio-related magazines, we recognized the need for a compilation of the many companies involved in speaker manufacturing." The company surveyed the industry, and the result was a 128-page publication listing more than 600 companies, representing almost 30 different countries. "Readers will find this is an indispensable guide in locating products - from adhesives to wires, accelerometers to voice coils. We trust you'll enjoy and learn from this handy sourcebook in your daily business dealings,” Ed Dell added.

Since then, LIS has remained a directory that relies on the industry itself to supply the profile information for each company listed. A task that was made considerably easier with email and the Internet, since listings could be submitted online by manufacturers, vendors, and service providers throughout the year. Five years ago, LIS was converted for the first time into a dedicated, always-online directory, complementing the annual printed publication, and available at www.loudspeakerindustrysourcebook.com

The listings that are submitted online are compiled once a year to generate the printed edition, but the Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook (LIS) publication and website also contains must-read articles, interviews with audio professionals on trending industry topics, and annual industry reports about the state of the industry. Also, the scope of the LIS directory itself has expanded to encompass new product categories and loudspeaker-related applications and technologies, from all the different types of audio transducers used in headphones, earphones, and smartphones, to the electronics and materials that support the latest audio applications.

One would think that with all the online tools and social media networks currently available to us, industries would be more connected than ever, but precisely the opposite happens. The world is now a global market, and professionals trying to identify a new potential source for components, materials, or services are faced with an impossible task to actually identify who's who in the never ending maze of online search engines. LIS is a straightforward reference resource for everyone working in R&D, manufacturing, sourcing, product management, technical support, marketing, or sales in the loudspeaker and related industries.
Click for more information, list your loudspeaker-related business (Free), and access to listing updates.
LIS is also curated with direct support from industry professionals who travel the world visiting companies and factories and attend the most important trade shows in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. That includes the editorial teams and contributing networks of Voice Coil and audioXpress monthly magazines, in direct cooperation with the most relevant industry associations.

Essentially, both the print sourcebook and the online directory aim to support the loudspeaker industry facing the challenges of technology evolution, fast-moving trends, and the need to move quickly when ideas need to become working concepts, prototypes and enter production. Leveraging all opportunities in a timely manner, creating a network of suppliers and strategic partners. And that is why the Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook continues to be an essential resource, getting better and stronger every year.

KCK Media Corp is now in the final preparation stages of Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook 2021, and we are at that all important time to make sure the information available is updated.

If your company is not listed, make sure to complete one of the online company profiles as you would like it to appear in the print edition - for Free. Or you can complement your online listing with an ad in the print and digital versions of the 2021 Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook. Review the category options for product and services and select those your company provides.

An All-JFET Amplifier: Exploring Modern JFETs Circuits
By Dimitri Danyuk
In this article for audioXpress, Dimitri Danyuk describes the design and performance of a high-quality DC-coupled all-JFET amplifier. The circuit was inspired by John Curl and Erno Borbely designs and was built with readily available junction-gate field-effect transistor (JFETs) from Linear Integrated Systems (now just Linear Systems). The input stage is the the complementary JFET differential pair, the second stage is symmetrical differential amplifier with two pairs of opposite polarity JFETs, and the output stage is a complementary source follower. The amplifier can drive loads up to 150Ω. This article was originally published in audioXpress, October 2017.  Read the Full Article Now Available Here
