SERDC Grant helps fund infrastructure and education
Canton and Clyde, NC Transition to Curbside Carts
The towns of Canton and Clyde are among the first recipients of the SERDC Recycling Infrastructure Grant funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation. In addition to the transition from recycling bags to curbside carts, which is currently happening, the cities are implementing an education program to include clear messaging on handouts, the cart itself and their websites. After the carts have been distributed, the cities will also work with the collection provider to conduct audits on participation and leave oops tags to help residents make sure that the materials collected remain contamination free.
Canton has 1900 households and hopes to increase their current 70% participation rate with the carts. Clyde has 565 households and estimates similar participation rates . The SERDC grant award is $14,333 for the combined cities. In addition, the communities have received a grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, and funding from both the county and individual towns.

In 2018, SERDC received $500,000 from the Coca-Cola Foundation to increase recycling infrastructure in the Southeastern US. Grants are evaluated upon submission and awards are made in ongoing cycles. The deadline for the spring 2020 round is March 15.

Aircraft recycling company to invest $100M in NC’s Global TransPark, creating 475 jobs
Posted December 19, 2019 on https://www.wraltechwire.com/

Aviation company Aircraft Solutions, with its “self-developed most effective new recycling technology,” is investing nearly $100 million to establish a new aircraft recycling center at North Carolina’s Global TransPark in Lenoir, County.

Aircraft Solutions serves commercial and military clients with aircraft that have reached their end of life stage and are ready for decommissioning. Despite an aircraft’s age, older airframes often contain many valuable parts and materials that can be recycled. Aircraft Solutions’ new recycling center will systematically remove, catalog, and inspect parts, certifying them as either usable, repairable, or unfit for service.

$240M investment will extend production life of York County SC paper mill
Posted December 16, 2019 on the Charlotte Business Journal

New-Indy Containerboard will extend the production life of a 63-year-old operation in York County by as much as another 40 years, executives say. The facility, which at last count employed about 430 workers, will convert to the production of containerboard used to make cardboard boxes.

The Catawba plant will add a new capability to New-Indy, which currently uses all-recycled fiber at its paper mills. The converted machines in York County will allow New-Indy the capability of mixing virgin pulp and paper with recycled fiber for customers.
