IAGB Calls for Community Youth Excellence Award Nominations
India Association of Greater Boston is pleased to invite nominations for the 2017 IAGB Community Youth Excellence award. Anyone – including parents, friends and relatives – can nominate a student. Students can also nominate themselves. The deadline is Monday, July 31.

IAGB will select two students, who demonstrate extraordinary achievement in one or more of the following areas:
  1. Community Service
  2. Academics
  3. Arts and music
  4. Sports
  5. Exceptional service of an altruistic nature for the greater good of the community.
  6. Other* areas not mentioned above.
    *Note: *IAGB reserves the right to determine if “other" areas submitted are eligible.


Qualifying Criteria
Nominees must be:
  • Rising junior or senior high school students of Indian origin.
  • Residents of MA and attending school in MA.

Required Documentation
Submit nominations with the following required supporting documentation by July 31 to iagb@iagb.org:
  • Student/school/town name, and student contact details (email, telephone number and address).
  • A one-page essay in Microsoft Word highlighting: ”Why I believe I* should be selected for the IAGB Youth Excellence Award.”

          *Insert name of nominee here, if nomination is made by someone other than nominee.

  • List major achievements in detail, using separate pages for each area of achievement. Include any supporting documents, such as images, videos, etc.

Selection and Recognition
According to IAGB Treasurer Sanjay Gowda, the selection committee will conduct a careful review of the submissions and hold the final say in selecting the award recipients. The awardees will be notified via email and recognized at India Day 2017 on Sunday, August 20, at the Hatch Shell in Boston.

Unity in Diversity Is Theme of India Day 2017

“Unity in Diversity” is the theme of IAGB’s annual India Day celebration, marking the 70th anniversary of India's Independence this year. India Day 2017 will be held on Sunday, August 20, at the Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston.


As always, guests can expect to enjoy cultural performances of music and dance, check out a variety of vendors, learn about community programs and, of course, enjoy the cuisine. IAGB continues its partnership with One World Cuisine to provide catering services at India Day, announces Director Narender Chhabra.

IAGB Appoints 2017 Nominating Committee
The  IAGB Executive Committee has appointed a three-person  2017 Nominating Committee. The committee will also oversee elections and be chaired by Dr.  Kaplesh Kumar Shiva Sheel  and  M. Rajinikant  are members.

Vision-Aid Presents Dance Ballet about Krishna: July 16
The Vision-Aid team presents, for the first time in New England, and with English narration, "Charmer, Warrior, Guide.” The dance ballet about Krishna’s childhood will begin at 4 pm on Sunday, July 16, at Littleton High School theater, Littleton, MA.

SETU Presents Vijay Tendulkar’s Kamala: September 16 and 17
Stage Ensemble Theater Unit (SETU) will stage two shows of prominent Indian playwright Vijay Tendulkar’s play "Kamala," in English, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, at Thoreau Middle School in Concord, MA. Each presentation will also feature a skit of gossiping wedding invitees from different social strata, embedded with popular Bollywood songs and dances. IAGB is partnering with SETU to raise funds for Ekal, a non-profit organization that provides basic education for rural and tribal people in India.

Tendulkar highlights the plight of underprivileged rural and tribal people in India. In so doing, he blends urban sophistication and rural simplicity and draws parallels with the oppression that is prevalent across male-dominated Indian society.

SETU
SETU is a non-profit English theater group in the Boston area. It strives to build bridges between Indian and Western cultures through the medium of theater. It also attempts to highlight India's social, political and economic scenarios from the past and the present.

Shishu Bharati Celebrates 29th Graduation Ceremony
ShishuBharati: School of Languages and Culture of India, celebrated its 29th graduation ceremony on June 18. With 52 students from three locations of the school – Lexington and Walpole, MA, and Nashua, NH, the class of 2017 is the largest graduating class in the school’s history.

Founded 39 years ago, Shishu Bharati has grown into a well-established organization. Its mission is to promote and foster a sense of Indian identity in Indian-American students by way of Indian language and culture classes. Several dedicated volunteers teach the classes.

Shishu Bharati President Dr. Seshi Sompuram thanked volunteers for their dedication and congratulated the first batch of 31-student volunteers, who received the United States Presidential Volunteer Service Award. He pointed out that many universities are waiving their language requirements in recognition of the school’s language programs.

Sipra Shah, principal for the past 35 years, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Other speakers at the ceremony included members of Shishu Bharati’s first graduating class and Sipra Shah’s children, Paromita Shah, associate director, National Immigration Project of the National Lawyer’s Guild; and Dr. Manish Shah, associate director, Cardiac Arrhythmia Research and assistant professor of medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine. Former student Aditi Patil, international affairs major at George Washington University, also spoke.

The school's leadership also announced an alumni program to sustain a dedicated community well into adulthood.
