An Endowment
Keeps on Giving

Recently, John Good of The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough made a cheque presentation of the proceeds from the Carol & Ralph Ingleton endowment, Camp Kawartha Kids Endowment Fund. This endowment is managed through the Foundation, and the proceeds help underprivileged children and youth attend camp.

If you are interested in learning more about the endowment and how you can help send a kid to camp, contact John Good at the Foundation office – john.good@cfgp.ca – and he will be pleased to provide you with details.

The Community Foundation is a public foundation and registered charity. They partner with donors to invest in community projects and to build resources that can address community needs.
The Great Canadian Giving Challenge

Throughout the month of June we participated in The Great Canadian Giving Challenge , an awareness and fund raising event orchestrated by Canada Helps
The Challenge was to raise funds for a specific purpose, and for every dollar we raised we received a ballot to be entered in random draw for an additional $10,000.00! Unfortunately, we did not win the draw, but we did raise $970.00 which is earmarked for the purchase of a Hoyer Lift and accessible dock ! A Hoyer Lift will help us move those with physical disabilities from dock to canoe, or kayak, or sail boat and ensure they are able to participate in waterfront activities once inaccessible to them!
These funds are a great start as we work toward our $5,000.00 goal!
A special thank you those donors who participated in the Challenge and supported our project!
We are Accessibility Champions

Recently, we were nominated by a friend of Camp Kawartha for the 2018 Accessibility Champion Award which recognizes businesses and organizations in the City and County of Peterborough who demonstrate a commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

We are very pleased to report that Camp Kawartha is the proud recipient of the City and County’s National Accessibility Champion Award. One of the reasons we received this prestigious award is because of the installation of the innovative accessible climbing wall generously funded in part by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Catherine & Maxwell Meighen Foundation, the Rick Hansen Foundation, Jackman Foundation, Peterborough Foundation, and the Pilkington Henniger Charitable Trust.
We are naturally very gratified to receive this recognition which acknowledges our ongoing efforts to become as accessible as possible. This is exciting news, and something worth celebrating!
SUMMER CAMP
A Message from
Summer Camp

Summer Camp 2018 is off to a fantastic start! Our beautiful site on Clear Lake has been busy with many programs. CK overnight, Session A, Session B, Intermediates and Pre-Leadership camp have come and gone in a blur of sunny days, sing-alongs and cabin activities. Our leadership programs have been jam-packed with paddle making, canoe trips and group initiatives. The heat and humidity have been intense, and we consider ourselves very lucky to be able to jump into the lake several times a day!
ENVIRONMENT CENTRE
The Circus Comes to the Environment Centre
Circus Day at the Environment Centre Day Camp was an amazing day of learning and fun! There were performances by Jen (Opal) Elchuk, from the Peterborough Academy of Circus Arts, face painting, and other circus related activities.
The kids were able witness amazing aerial silks, poi (fire spinning) and hoola-hooping. Our campers were then able to try out the silk for themselves (with some extra help), as well as non-flammable poi.
The day ended with some fabulous face painting by one of our amazing leaders, transforming kids into their favourite animals! This special event was just one of the many fabulous special guests that the Environment Centre Day camp loves to bring in to enrich our programming.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Congratulations Mike Bishop!
Our Bookkeeper, Mike Bishop, recently celebrated his 30 th anniversary with the Camp!
Mike has devotedly made sure bills have been paid, taxes remitted, and auditors made happy as the Camp has grown.
When asked what has changed the most at the Camp since he started in 1988, he said without hesitation, computers. Computers have eliminated the need for paper-based, hand-written spreadsheets the size of a desktop, and made his duties more manageable!
Congratulations Mike on your long and devoted tenure here, and may you have many more years of number crunching!
GIFT STORE
THE GIFT STORE GETS NEW DIGS
(and we need to give it a name, so enter our contest to win!)

Our gift store is moving out of the office and into its own home near the main entrance. The store is busy year-round, offering unique Camp Kawartha hoodies, t-shirts and hats, as well as books, games, and stuffed animals. Each item is a reminder of a special Camp Kawartha visit!
The new home will free up space in the office, and give the store a real presence on Camp grounds.

Now all we need to do is give it a name!
Enter our contest to name the Gift Store and win a Camp t-shirt.  Send your entry to philanthropy@campkawartha.ca by August 24 th to win!
NATURE NOTE
Cling-Ons are Everywhere....
No, we don’t mean Klingons ala Star Trek, we mean cling-ons, those seeds, such as burdock seeds, that attach themselves to fur, feathers and even socks. The seeds are carried to a new home via this distribution system, a very clever and successful survival method. Executive Director, Jacob Rodenburg, suggests you try this experiment – go on a sock walk

THANK YOU
Dan McWilliams has generously offered space at McWilliams Moving and Storage warehouse for our 1961 Lakefield Auto Topper which was donated for auction by Prior Smith. The boat and motor set were auctioned off at our Surf ‘n’ Turf, and then graciously donated back to the Camp to auction by the winner! Mr. McWilliams offered space to store this precious item and we thank him and his team for this supportive gesture.
Beard Free Brewing is a local brewery with a focus on providing the local market from their in-house tap room on the Parkway. They very kindly participated in our Alumni Weekend in June. It was a great weekend of reconnecting and reminiscing. Thank you Beard Free for making it an extra special get-together!
We want to extend a big thank you to  Runner's Life  for their generous donation to Camp Kawartha from the  Stoney Lake Triathlon !
Pictured receiving the donation is Jason Huffman (President of our Board of Directors), Fiona Lasenby (Chair of the Alumni Committee), and Matthew Walmsley (Environmental & Outdoor Educator) all of whom successfully completed the Triathlon this year!
