LAAC in Action
Dan Bradley Fellows

Thanks to generous donations from LAAC supporters, we are proud to announce that we are able to award two law students with the Dan  Bradley Fellowship in 2019. This year's Fellows are Anthony Lee and Jorge Lopez-Espindola. Anthony is interning with California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc (CRLA) and Jorge with Legal Aid of Marin.
Anthony lives in Idaho and is bringing his rural experience with him to CRLA. Anthony has worked with the ACLU - Idaho, Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, and the Metropolitan Public Defenders in rural Washington County. Anthony is hoping to gain more effective strategies to support and advocate for marginalized and rural communities through his internship and the Dan Bradley Fellowship. Upon graduating from law school, he hopes to work in immigration advocacy.
Jorge is from Marin and is the grandson of a farm worker. He has already had the chance to work on immigration cases and served as a translator. He also worked as a peer mentor to first-generation college students to support their successful academic experience. Jorge is fluent in Spanish and will be assisting Legal Aid of Marin with translation services specific to clients seeking housing and employment-related legal assistance.
LAAC Advocacy Update

2019-2020 California State Budget:

The $214.8 billion California State Budget was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on June 27, 2019 with critical legal aid funding.

The budget includes a one-time increase of $20 million for Equal Access Funds (EAF) and $2.5 million for Shriver Projects. LAAC has been deeply involved in the State Budgetary process, lobbying for the EAF and funding to the Shriver Projects.

LAAC Recruitment & Retention Study Update

Law Student Survey The State Bar of California and LAAC are jointly looking at how and why law students make career choices.  We want to know what factors influence those career choices and how important those factors are to law students. Help us spread our law student survey to current law students, like those  clerking or interning at your organization for the summer. Please email Zach Newman ( [email protected] ) with the name and email address of the current law student so Zach can send them the link.

Former Attorney Survey:
We also want to hear from former legal aid attorneys! Please send the name, organization, and email address of former attorneys who left a legal aid organization in 2017 or 2018 to Zach for him to send them the former attorney survey link.
