NEWS & UPDATES
Reconciliation Starts with Mutual Understanding
Camp Kawartha is proud to have been a part of the 5 th Adventure in Understanding Program.  Over 20 First Nations and non-First Nations youth participated in a unique canoe journey this past August. Organized by the Rotary Club of Peterborough/Kawartha, Curve Lake and the Canadian Canoe Museum and led by Camp Kawartha staff, this was a 6 day, 5 night, 100 km canoe trip through the Kawartha lakes teaching youth about First Nations History and fostering cross-cultural understanding. Both First Nations and non-First Nations youth paddled together towards reconciliation. They learned about the history of the Anishinaabe in this region and the significance of the Williams Treaty. They also discovered first hand, the beauty of the Kawartha Lakes watershed and the importance of protecting the ecological integrity of these lakes and rivers. This is the fifth year of the trip and the largest yet. The trip culminated in a celebration and feast at Curve Lake First Nations.

Inspiring Leadership Across the Province
Recently, Camp Kawartha’s Executive Director, Jacob Rodenburg, was the keynote speaker for the Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario’s annual conference. He shared techniques and strategies with close to 200 educators, helping them infuse more nature education into their practice.

Jacob was also the keynote speaker for the York Board of Education’s Professional Leadership program, encouraging teachers to take their students outside.

Additionally, Camp Kawartha was recently recognized as an Accessibility Champion by the Ontario Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility. We were commended for our accessible climbing wall, wheel chair accessible pathway down to the waterfront and our efforts in striving for more inclusivity.
Pathway to Stewardship and Kinship Program Piloted in 42 classes...
We are on the Pathway! More than 40 classes are participating in stewardship activities as part of Camp Kawartha’s Pathway to Stewardship and Kinship pilot project. Students will be engaging in activities that connect them to nature and help to lay the foundation for future stewardship. The Peterborough Field Naturalists have kindly offered to assist in offering nature experiences to students from early childhood to Grade 7.
Stay tuned as the Pathway forges ever forward!

THANK YOU
We are very grateful to Philina Milanczak of Markham who donated her ‘Lily Pad’, a great addition to our waterfront activities. Philina won the pad in a raffle, but as she had no use for the large pad she asked Deb Lineberry of Paris Marine who might benefit from such an item. Deb recommended us, and we are very excited that she did. Thank you to Philina and Deb for making this happen! Two thumbs up!!
The Central Ontario Offroad Jeep Club is a group focused on social, recreational and educational activities designed to foster the enjoyment of off-road vehicles while protecting and preserving our natural resources. Their group leadership hosted a series of events throughout the summer and were able to donate $2,500.00 to the Camp! Thank you to Angie Sims for her efforts on our behalf and to the Club membership for their generosity.
Sue Sharp and her team at Brant Basics gave us the use of one of their main windows on George Street to set up a promotional display. The focus of our display was our Capital Campaign – Branching Out for a Sustainable Future! From all accounts it attracted a good deal of attention from passersby. Thank you Brant Basics for helping us showcase our plans for the future!
