This Week's Service:
Why Should We Be Good?

If the "bottom line" for Unitarian Universalists is that we should lead good lives, we may still need to ask "why?" Why should we be good; wouldn't it be more fun to be bad? The Rev. Dr. Peter Lee Scott, Minister Emeritus of UU churches in Little Falls and Salisbury Center, is our guest speaker.

This Week's Drop-In Discussion: Hell's Ramparts Fell.  John Murray is generally considered to be the founder of the Universalist denomination in the United States.  We'll talk about who he was and why his doctrine of universal salvation was embraced so fervently by some and hated by others.  Phil Ebersole will facilitate.
Permaculture Social Justice Plate  Offering

This Sunday, September 29, the offering will be benefit Lots of Food, an organization committed to planting fresh fruits and vegetables throughout Rochester neighborhoods for any and everybody to eat. Lots of Food intends to make edible landscaping freely accessible and available while sowing seed of sustainability and Food Justice. Donations will be used to purchase trees, shrubs, seeds and other materials for our community gardens.

First U building House News

The House Committee is due to meet on October 6 for the first time since the renovation work began, i.e. in roughly 18 months.  The first item on the agenda will be to prepare for the next Clean-up Day on Saturday October 19.  We will also have to address the problem of the exterior Court Street lights that were ripped from the wall and stolen around September 20.

The parking lot is due for some spot repairs.  The job will take place on some Saturday morning when Kevin & Russ can squeeze it in.  The lot will be closed for a few hours.

Bread Sunday

"Man and woman cannot live by bread alone" is the well-known biblical phrase.  And we have been told that bread is the staff of life.   We remember the alleged comment from the French empress when told that there was no bread for the commoner she replied let them eat cake.  All of this is to remind us that we will celebrate the centrality of bread in our lives on October 20th this year.

Members are encouraged to bring their favorite home-made bread to share during coffee hour.  MOCHA will provide the butter, jellies, jams, cream cheese to enrich the offerings.  If you will provide bread for this service, please let Bill or Becky Elwell know of your offering.

NEXT SERVICE: Sunday, October 6: God is Not God's Name Whether in its masculine or feminine form, any name for god is just too small. THIS IS BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY, PLEASE DO SO. I'll try my best not to disappoint. J Rev. Martha L. Munson.

NEXT DROP-IN DISCUSSION: Sunday, October 6: Children's Sabbath. Beating Swords into Plowshares: Ending the Violence of Guns and Child Poverty is the theme of the 22nd annual Children's Sabbaths observance, a time to remember children and our responsibility to keep them safe and growing.  Ten-year-old Jack Sullivan, the Founder of Catherine's Peace Team, upon the death of his cousin Catherine, a first grader in Sandy Hook Elementary, quickly organized a team of young children and adult friends dedicated to keeping Catherine's memory and her love of animals alive.  Let the children lead the way!  Elizabeth Osta will facilitate. (As part of First Universalist observance of Children's Sabbath, our social justice plate on Oct. 20th will be for an animal sanctuary being built in Catherine's memory.)

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:Kids ages four and older join us every week in the sanctuary for the first portion of our worship service. Children's Worship begins after the Message for All Ages.  Nursery care for babies and younger children is provided throughout the service on the second floor.  We also have seating in our second floor foyer, where parents can hold their little ones and listen to the service via speaker.
