This Week's Service:
A Parable for Today

Sister Barbara Moore, RSM, Associate Faculty, Professor of Preaching and PracticalTheology, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, and Director of the Program for Study of Women and Gender in Church and Society. Sister Moore is also the 2014 recipient of the Greater Rochester Council of Churches Faith in Action Network Metropolitan Award.

This Week's Drop-In Discussion: An Addictive World.  Paul Graham wrote a provocative article http://www.paulgraham.com/addiction.html in which he argued that all of the things we describe as addictive are accelerating and we should not want to stop the process. Bill Elwell will lead a discussion of our own addictions and of how we are living and have always lived in an addictive world.

Fire Drill

On Sunday, October 5th, our RE students will be doing a practice fire drill. The drill will happen at 11:30, immediately following worship and before coffee hour. All RE volunteers are asked to report to the children's worship space at that time to take part in the drill; all others are asked to remain in the sanctuary for a few minutes after the service, to review procedures for exiting that part of the church. We expect this to take only a few minutes. Thank you for your cooperation in this short, but important, exercise.

Cozy Friday Night Supper

Join us for our next Cozy Friday Night Supper with Faith Development 5:30 to 7:30 PM on October 17th.  Supper, with a vegan option, is provided.  This session will focus on the fifth principle of the UUA - The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.

Sign up on the bulletin board in the Clara Barton Lounge, or contact Kathy Russell 585-544-2643 or [email protected].   Your RSVP/Sign Up will allow us to prepare appropriately.  Child-friendly activities exploring this principle will be arranged if you make a request one week in advance.

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 28, 2014:

NEXT SERVICE: Sunday, October 5: A Sacred-Space Odyssey. As we enter the final weeks of our PACT campaign, we'll consider a few stories from our history in this space, and listen for what guidance they might give us going forward.

NEXT DROP-IN DISCUSSION: Sunday, October 5:  Don't Believe Everything You Think!  You may have noticed troubles in the world.  Many stem from disagreement between people who "know" they are right, but who believe opposite "facts."   Why should that be?  Hank Stone will lead a discussion.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Kids ages four and older join us every week in the sanctuary for the first portion of our worship service. Children's Worship begins after the Message for All Ages. Nursery care for babies and younger children is on the second floor provided throughout the service. We also have seating in our second floor foyer, where parents can hold their little ones and listen to the service via speaker.

ARE YOU NEW TO FIRST UNIVERSALIST?  Have you come a few times and want to find out more about Unitarian Universalism and our congregation?  Then stop by the Welcome Table  in the Clara Barton Lounge during coffee hour.  You'll find friendly folks there every Sunday who are eager to talk with you!

SOCIAL JUSTICE PLATE OFFERING is today. This month's social justice plate will go to Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (RAIHN), an organization which provides food, shelter and support for temporarily homeless families.

BOOK GROUP is TODAY, Sunday, September 28th, 12:15, in the Adult Lounge. This month's selection is "Year of Wonder" by Geraldine Brooks, a book which gives us a glimpse into the strangeness of history that simultaneously enables us to see a reflection of ourselves.  Everyone is welcome.

FALL CLEAN-UP DAY: The 2014 Fall Clean-up Day has been scheduled for Saturday October 4th, starting around 9:00 AM. There will be all kinds of cleaning, fixing, painting, etc. jobs to be completed - something for all skill levels.  Bring along your favorite tools or cleaning products.  Breakfast snacks and a light lunch will be provided.  Socializing and fun will also be part of the agenda.  For more information, please contact Tom Ruganis at 746-7796 (cell) or 442-2968 (home) or email to [email protected]
