UHealth-University of Miami Health System to Open Medical Center in Downtown Doral
The University of Miami Health System plans to continue the expansion of its services throughout South Florida by building a medical center in Downtown Doral, the 250-acre mixed-use community developed by Codina Partners. The 100,000-square-foot, four-story UHealth at Downtown Doral, near the intersection of NW 87th Avenue and 53rd Street, will be modeled after UHealth's award-winning Lennar Foundation Medical Center on the University's Coral Gables campus. It will provide a wide array of health services to the Doral community.

"This state-of-the-art facility will allow UHealth to bring world-class health care to the rapidly growing Doral community and will serve as a western hub for our distinguished regional network of ambulatory services," said Edward Abraham, MD, Executive VP for Health Affairs and CEO of UHealth. "We are committed to providing personalized care to the people living and working in Doral."

Cleveland Clinic Florida Performs 100th Heart Transplant
Cleveland Clinic Florida completed its 100th heart transplant when 71-year old Ft. Pierce resident Gary Pettit received a new heart at its hospital in Weston, Florida in late September. Pettit, a resident of Hutchinson Island, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure and had been battling heart issues for 11 years. Following the surgery, Pettit had high praise for the Clinic's surgical team and said he "feels great" while continuing to undergo cardiac rehabilitation at his home. Cleveland Clinic Florida began its heart transplant program at the Weston hospital in 2014. The #1 ranked hospital in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market by US News & World Report, developed the program in close collaboration with Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, which has ranked #1 in heart care by US News & World Report for 25 consecutive years.

"In five short years, we've been able to give 100 patients a new heart and a new chance at life," said Rodolfo Blandon, MD, President of Cleveland Clinic Weston. "This milestone not only showcases the significant growth of our transplant program, but also our expertise and ability to provide world-class care. VITAS Announces New Director
VITAS® Healthcare, a national provider of end-of-life care based in Miami, has named Rory Farrand as director of VITAS® Palliative Care. In her new role, Farrand oversees the operations of VITAS' palliative care initiatives enterprise-wide to formalize, broaden and expand palliative care services and solutions to VITAS patients, families and healthcare providers. Her key objectives include embedding goals-of-care conversation expertise into the palliative care specialty and serving as an industry advocate for legislative and regulatory action toward community-based palliative care delivery models. Farrand's varied career spans clinical research, assisted living management, Alzheimer's/dementia care, geriatric psychiatry, and nursing and executive management of clinical operations for national companies that specialize in palliative care. She attributes her interest in palliative medicine to the challenges she and her family faced during her mother's death from cancer.
