This Week's Service
Sunday, August 14
10:00 a.m. Service:   Orangeade for the Tourists. Sometimes what the world asks of us is at odds with what we feel is our job. At these times, we need to stretch ourselves. In this re-working of one of my early sermons, I will explore what happens when we can go beyond ourselves, and meet the needs of others. — Summer Minister, Peter House

11:15 a.m. Drop-in Discussion:  Personal Safety Nets.  Kate Fleury will lead a discussion on developing your personal support system ahead of time for when you will need help, and on being a member of a support group for others.
Upcoming Events
Gun Storage Act Public Hearing - August 13

Please join us for a public hearing to support gun safety in Monroe County on Saturday, August 13 at 2 PM at the Henrietta Public Library (455 Calkins Rd.).

Participate in this event with other  members of the church by attending and discussing the Proposed Safe Storage of Firearms Act with County Legislator Ernest Flagler-Mitchell, author.

The purpose of the legislation is quite simple:  When the owner of a firearm does not have it in his possession or control it must be stored and locked in a suitable cabinet or a device that makes the firearm unusable until the device is disabled.

While no single law can eliminate gun violence, it is a combination of targeted laws such as safe storage and other laws and programs that will make our communities safer, reduce accidental shootings and gun suicides by our young people. Join us as we stand up as a group for gun safety.

To get involved in other activities to eliminate gun violence, contact Becky Elwell at [email protected].

Earth Justice

There will be a table devoted to planet sustainability after Sunday's service on August 14. Stop by and talk to other interested people and let us know your level of interest and what actions you think we should pursue.

Train for RAIHN*

Learn how you can join other church members in helping temporarily homeless families get back on their feet. Attend a training session Thursday, August 18th, 6:30-8:30 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 43 Gebhardt Rd., Penfield. RSVP to Jen Canning,  [email protected] or 506-9050. Questions? Additional Announcements

FOOD INGATHERING:  This coming Sunday, August 14, is our monthly food ingathering. Please consider bringing a non-perishable food item to be collected during the service and donated to the Community Food Cupboard, which provides monthly food service to qualified seniors and emergency provisions to families in need.  Just a friendly reminder to check expiration dates on donated items. Thank you for your generosity!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AFTER CHURCH:  The work at the church continues.  Next Sunday, August 14th the House Committee needs volunteers to help move all of the furniture from the Church office and the Volunteer office to the Clara Barton Lounge. This is in preparation for the refinishing of the office floors.  We will start immediately after the coffee hour. As there will be both heavy and light objects to move, many hands will get the work done quickly. Please stay to help out.

LIBRARY OPEN AUGUST 14:  Although the church library and bookstore are normally closed during the summer, they will be open for browsing, borrowing and buying on during coffee hour on Sunday, August 14.  Shirley Bond will be librarian.  The library and bookstore will resume their every-Sunday schedule on September 11.

OFFICE RENOVATIONS:  The week of August 15-19, the office floors will be getting refinished.  The Volunteer Office will be inaccessible during that time.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

CHURCH OFFICE HOURS:  Summer hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 AM - 3:15 PM.  The office is closed on Fridays.

To submit an item for "This Week at First Universalist", e-mail [email protected] no later than Wednesday at noon throughout the summer.  Thank you!
