This Week's Service:
Theologies, or How Good is Your Diet?

Sometimes UUs dine at the cafeteria of beliefs and practices. We partake of a little bit of this and a little bit of that.  For a time, this may be enough. As a steady diet, we might need more depth and less "pick and choose".  Or not, you decide. Rev. Martha L. Munson.

This Week's Drop-In Discussion: Social Norms and Self-Control.  We will examine certain aspects of predictable irrationality, such as why we are happy to do certain things for free, but not when we are paid to do them, and why we can't make ourselves do certain things we actually want to do.  This was rescheduled from Sept. 22.  Bill Elwell will facilitate.

The change drive is here!!Are you jingling and jangling with those coins?  Don't forget to bring your change to church on October 27 or November 3!! Last year's change drive raised over $600 for our church's programs,  proving once again that when we pool our resources, we can really make a difference.

Look for change collection spot in the Clara Barton lounge before and after the services on the 27th and 3rd,  and while you're at it,  pick up a report from our church's most recent fiscal year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR OCTOBER 20, 2013:

NEXT SERVICE: Sunday, October 27: What Can a Church Do? In the face of so much adversity, many of our urban children struggle to achieve in school. When dealing with multiple risk factors it logically follows that our children desperately need multiple protective factors. As a member of this community, how can you as an individual or group rally around a child or children to help them reach their full potential? Guest speaker Dr. Bolgen Vargas.

NEXT DROP-IN DISCUSSION: Sunday, October 27: Reproductive Justice.  The UUA has asserted the right of every woman to be able to choose whether to have or not to have children, and the right of every parent to bring up children in a safe and healthy environment.  We'll discuss how to achieve this, as part of a UU study-action process intended to culminate in a General Assembly resolution in 2016.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Kids ages four and older join us every week in the sanctuary for the first portion of our worship service. Children's Worship begins after the Message for All Ages.  Nursery care for babies and younger children is provided throughout the service on the second floor.  We also have seating in our second floor foyer, where parents can hold their little ones and listen to the service via speaker.

ARE YOU NEW TO FIRST UNIVERSALIST?  Have you come a few times and want to find out more about Unitarian Universalism and our congregation?  Then stop by the Welcome Table  in the Clara Barton Lounge during coffee hour.  You'll find friendly folks there every Sunday who are eager to talk with you!

SOCIAL JUSTICE PLATE OFFERING is today. Money collected will benefit the Catherine Violet Hubbard AnimalSanctuary in memory of a six year old child killed in Newtown almost a year ago.  In addition, Elizabeth Osta will be available at a table in the Clara Barton Lounge.  She invites you to sign a petition to the Monroe County Executive, to increase funding for childcare subsidies for income-eligible working families.

THE SEARCH COMMITTEE is in need of digital images of Church auction, Pride Parade, Occupy Rochester, Church picnics, Holiday Shoppe, Holiday activities, and other church events. Please email JPEG images to Lisa Gwinner at [email protected]

FALL ORIENTATION SERIES: Today, Reverend Munson will lead the group in discussing where each of us has come from theologically, and where we see ourselves today.  On November 3, we'll talk about our strengths and talents, involvement in the church community, and how we, as your church community, can help and support you on your faith journey. They will start at 12:15 and last for about an hour. Childcare will be provided. Please join us for one or all of these sessions.  All are welcome! Contact Nancy at [email protected].

LADIES WHO LUNCH will be meeting on Wednesday, Oct 23 at noon at Opa! Authentic Greek Koozina on Jefferson Road. All women are welcome. Newcomb Losh is handling the reservations. Contact her at [email protected] or at (585) 377-0532 by Oct 21st.
