Planning for a Successful School Year

Summer vacation is ending and the new school year is just around the corner. Many children feel anxious upon the new school year. They may face a new classroom, new friends and teachers or maybe an entirely new educational environment. The more prepared we are to tackle the school year, the less anxiety your child may experience. So how can we help our children prepare for the school year?
Allow your child to partake in shopping for their school supplies. The child can assist in obtaining the correct amount and style of supplies. If you feel your child may be overwhelmed by a vast array of options, select a few items that you think they would like and give them a choice. For example, if your child likes The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Minions and Paw Patrol, show them the 3 backpacks and let them make the final decision.
If your child is anything like mine, their backpack is full of additional items that they have to take to school. Things like an augmentative communication device and additional therapy supplies can significantly increase the weight of a backpack. Some children benefit from having a rolling backpack versus a traditional backpack that can cause stress to their bodies. Rolling backpacks are also a great tool to help your child get accustomed to being responsible for their own belongings when it comes to traveling.

Autism Awareness Training for the Community
Think of all the different places our children with autism visit on a daily basis and how their experience could be improved. Schools, libraries, after-school programs, daycares, gyms, aquatic centers, sport teams, stores, etc.
Each of these could benefit from AZA United's
Autism Awareness Training
. This program helps peers, staff and other members in the community become more aware of the challenges that children with autism can face.
The goal of our Autism Awareness Training is to encourage members in the community to accept, include and support children with autism in daily activities. This awareness training gives people the opportunity to learn about autism and encourages inclusive relationships. It is designed to support and complement anti-bullying programs that might already be in place.
Autism Awareness Training is being offered to public schools in Maricopa County at NO cost, thanks to generous grant supports. There may be a small fee for other groups.

Enter our annual contest for families! Send us your high resolution photos to be part of our 2019 AZA Families photo collage. Prizes vary every year, last year's winners received a gift that was of special interest to their child.

Success. At Arizona Autism United, we believe that every family and person with autism has their own definition of success and our job is to help them get there.
Choose your favorite picture of your child achieving their goals or doing something new that you weren't sure would ever happen. Then please complete the following information with your submission:
First name and age of child.
Quote (One sentence please. What is your child or family's success?).
Photo must illustrate the success quote.
See the photo above for ideas! Other examples include:
"Success is watching my daughter learn to dance."
Creativity is encouraged! The deadline is
August 2, 2019.
How to enter:
- Visit this website to upload your photos: www.hightail.com/u/AZAunited
- Submit as many as you like! Send us the largest file size you have for best quality.
- Include your full name, email, phone number, and two sentences as you upload your photos.
AZA United may use submitted photos for different materials such as events, social media, etc. After your submission,
you will receive an email with a photo release form to sign electronically. We must receive the signed form in order to enter your photos into the contest.

Announcements
The Arizona Department of Economic Security, Division of Developmental Disabilities
is holding Provider Rate Increase Forums this month. Governor Ducey and the Arizona State Legislature approved funding in the most recent Legislative session that will allow DDD to increase rates paid to Providers for DDD funded services.
Members, families, advocates and providers who cannot attend a meeting in person can download and review the presentation and submit their comments using the form below. The public comment period will end on August 8, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. Click here to learn more

Gillis "GW" Williams is a young adult on the spectrum. GW is an entrepreneur and launched his own company,
AutismChoseMe, which allows him the opportunity to provide motivational and public speaking engagements to spread awareness about autism.
AutismChoseMe has wristbands available for purchase and GW has graciously offered to donate a portion of the proceeds to AZA United.
