Installation of Temporary Signal at State Route 530 and Smokey Point Boulevard Delayed Until Fall

Despite the City's best efforts, the installation of the temporary signal at State Route 530 (SR-530) and Smokey Point Boulevard has been delayed until late September or early October. " We owe the community an apology," said Jim Kelly, City of Arlington Public Works Director. "Despite our best efforts, we were not able to get a temporary signal installed at the intersection of Smokey Point Blvd. and SR-530 by the end of June."

The City's team has been working closely with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) since November 2018 to receive approval and permits to install the signal. WSDOT has agreed that a signal is now warranted at the intersection of SR-530 and Smokey Point Blvd. and has approved for the City to move forward with the final permitting and construction of the temporary signal. WSDOT has required that the City add elements to the project at multiple points during their review process, which has unfortunately delayed the issuance of the necessary approvals.  Just yesterday, WSDOT authorized the City to  purchase the traffic signal electronic controller and the cabinet to house the controller, one of the main pieces needed for the project.

"To say that we are disappointed that the signal is not yet installed would be an understatement," Mr. Kelly continued. "We are truly just as disappointed that we were not able to deliver a temporary signal by the end of June."

Before the City can publicly bid the signal project, WSDOT must also approve the construction plans and the equipment to be installed because it is on their state highway. The City's current schedule projects the awarding of the construction contract at the City Council's August 5 meeting. If everything goes smoothly, the signal will be installed and operating in late September or early October.

"Our staff will work with WSDOT and the contractors, once selected, to get this signal operational as quickly as possible," Mr. Kelly concluded. "We greatly appreciate our community's patience as we navigate through the multiple steps to receive the required approvals and permits. We will keep the community updated with our progress and look forward to the signal going live soon."

The City is aware that this signal is a temporary solution to a larger problem within the SR-530 corridor. Mayor Barbara Tolbert stated, "I t is a high priority for us to continue working with all of our partners, including Darrington, Marysville, Snohomish County, the Stillaguamish Tribe, WSDOT and the State Legislature, to arrive at solutions to address the traffic issues facing all of us on SR-530."

Student Designed Artistic Bike Racks Installed on Olympic Avenue

New bike racks for downtown have now been installed, thanks to the hard work of Arlington High School students in the Advanced Engineering/Manufacturing class.  These racks were designed and produced by the students, manufactured by the great staff at Universal Aerospace Co., and powder coated by Powder Fab, Inc.

The 13 racks designed by the students have been installed at various locations on Olympic Avenue. Thank you to all who helped bring this project to reality!
