STEWARDSHIP - Moving Us Closer to God
A year or so ago when our Sunday readings were focused on gratitude, I was surprised to find a great deal of research documenting the personal benefits of a grateful attitude. This weekend our readings are about humility and, sure enough, there is a lot written on that too.

The articles and papers range from humility as a key leadership trait to the benefits of humility in our personal life. The one article that grabbed my attention was titled, How Humility Will Make You the Greatest Person Ever . The words humility and the greatest person ever don’t seem like they should be in the same sentence, but after some thought, I realized the phrase described Jesus Christ.

This article, authored at UC Berkeley, explained the personal benefits of humility like this, “Humble people handle stress more effectively and report higher levels of physical and mental well-being. They also show greater generosity, helpfulness, and gratitude, things that can only serve to draw us closer to others.” There are also benefits for people with whom they interact, “Truly humble people see and accept their own strengths and limitations without defensiveness or judgment, a core dimension of humility, and one that cultivates a powerful compassion for humanity.”

The article goes on to offer three “scientifically-based ways” to start (or improve on) being humble. The suggestions include: embracing our humanness, practicing mindfulness and self-compassion, and expressing our gratitude (there’s that word again!)

The article ends with a quote from Nelson Mandela; “Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, honesty, and humility.” These qualities are also part of a stewardship way of life. So, let’s start with some humility and remember that our goal is not to achieve just humility, but all those qualities evident in the life of Jesus Christ.

THE 50th ANNUAL PARISH FAIR is OCTOBER 17-18
Safer at Home for many of us has given us time to clean, sort and organize.
Our prayers continue for those directly affected and on the front lines of COVID-19 and we also want to look ahead to brighter times. We hope that will include the 50th American Martyrs Parish Fair as scheduled.

We'd love to celebrate our Fair's storied history at the 50th Annual American Martyrs Parish Fair this October. We are blessed to have so many parishioners who have attended many, many fairs over the past 49 years. We want to hear from you!

Send your photos, stories, and description of memorabilia you may have from Parish Fairs past to Fair50@AmericanMartyrs.org .  Please include dates whenever possible.

We're also looking for someone (or a couple someones) who have a love for history and might be interested in helping curate and organize the photos, stories, memorabilia and more.

Thanks and see you at Fair 50!
