This Week's Shir Chadash To-Do List
  • June 26: Fancy Friday - Roaring 20s!
Stay Connected!
Be honest - have you been wearing the same pair of sweatpants for a while? Are you losing track of time because you're not dressing up for Shabbat? Shir Chadash has the answer...

FANCY FRIDAYS!

Every week we'll dress to a different theme. Put on your glad rags (and your makeup and your jewelry...), take a photo of yourself/yourselves and send it to us at  [email protected]  so we can share it on our Facebook page, or dress to impress for Kabbalat Shabbat!

This week: The Roaring 20s!
Spread the Smiles
We know that these last couple months have been unlike any other and that we have all had to adjust to our new way of life in quarantine. We hope that along with all the change we have experienced, there have been moments of laughter and lots of smiles - and we would love to hear about them! Please share a fun moment or experience you have had while staying at home - whether it's a piece of writing, or maybe a photo - we would love to share a smile with the rest of the community.
If you would like to contribute,
e-mail us at [email protected] , and spread the smiles!

Here are some entries from this past week:

Shabbat Shalom!
Dear Shir Chadash community,

At the end of just about every email since the pandemic began, you can find our prayer for medical workers.  The reference to Aaron in that prayer is taken from this week’s Torah portion, when Aaron places his own body between the living and the dying so as to put an end to a plague.

This Torah portion isn’t short on leadership models.  We learn about Korach, Moses, Datan, Abiram - even the mysteriously disappearing On ben Pelet who only shows up in one verse and then never again.  But Aaron is a different kind of leader.

Later in the parashah, each of the tribal chieftains gives their staff - the symbol of their leadership - to Moses.  Moses puts all of them into the Tent of Meeting.  The next morning, Aaron’s staff looks different from all the others: it has put out sprouts, and produced blossoms and bourne almonds.

What a beautiful image of leadership this is.  The dead wood of the staff softens and flourishes and miraculously produces shoots, flowers and fruit all at the same time.  It is as if we are being taught that leadership needs flexibility and adaptability, the capacity to do more than one thing at once.

If, as I believe, every character in the Torah represents an aspect of our inner selves, I hope that this week we can each find our resourceful, courageous, adaptable internal Aaron.  We need him at times like these.

I wish us a peaceful, restful, flourishing Shabbat.
Rabbi Silver

Virtual services and
pre/post Shabbat materials
We hope that playing these in the background has been getting you in the mood for Shabbat!

Here  is our Shabbat playlist and for our younger members,  here  is the Shir Chadash Youtube page, where you can spend some time with Miss Meryl and the Shabbat dinosaur!

And a short video about finding solutions when we disagree.

Please join us for Kabbalat Shabbat at this link on Friday night at 6:15 pm. We welcome special guest, Arnie Fielkow from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans. We are very excited to have him "in the room".

Our community havdalah this week will be at 9 pm.
Shabbat morning liturgy at home
I hope that by now we are in the habit of making a computer-free time on Shabbat to pray, to reflect and to study.

You can find an online Siddur here - please download before Shabbat.

At the end of this article is Rabbi Wayne Dosick’s prayer to say in place of Kaddish.
Parashat Korach
Torah: Numbers 16:1 - 17:15
Maftir: Numbers 17:9-15
Haftarah: 1 Samuel 11:14 - 12:22
Torah study

The Torah reading for this week is in the red panel above. If you do not have a Humash at home you can find it on the link below. We are reading Triennial Year 1, but you might like to read the full portion (“ Full Kriyah ”).

Korach is a wonderful Torah portion for folks who like to discuss and argue.  Here are links to Rabbi Jonathan Sacks’   Covenant and Conversation  and its “family edition” - please print before Shabbat if you’d like to use:

If you would like a little giggle, this is a classic sketch about Korah from the Israeli satirical series, “The Jews Are Coming.”  There are no subtitles, sadly, but hopefully it’s not too hard to follow the gist - all you need to know is that Korah is annoyed that only Moses gets to speak to God, and that Korah’s big idea is…Casual Monday!
Brochure

Our Shabbat brochure with the Verse To Live By, yahrzeits, and simchas for this week is attached . You might wish to take special notice of those who are sick and take a moment to direct your thoughts towards them.
Prayer for Medical Workers

Please continue to say this prayer for all those who work to keep us healthy and safe.
Holy One
We ask your blessing for our doctors
for our nurses
for all our hospital workers
who stand between the living and the dying
as Aaron once stood.

Help them to know they are not alone
as they undertake the overwhelming holy work
of deploying and organizing,
of caring and healing and comforting.

Bring them strength
and fortitude
and grace.

May the work of their hands be blessed.
And we say,
Amen.
