February 2020 Equity Alliance Roundtable

Every Halloween and discussion of sports mascots surfaces questions about if and how to utilize elements of other people's cultures in our day-to-day lives. February's Roundtable will define and explore cultural appropriation using articles, videos, and hands-on activities. Participants will compare and contrast appropriation to cultural exchange, appreciation, and assimilation. In race-based affinity groups, participants will explore the causes and impacts of cultural appropriation. By the end of the session, participants will identify strategies for identifying and avoiding appropriation.

All Roundtable sessions include time for personal reflection (including thinking and feeling), small group conversation, and practice talking about race, with an aim of supporting productive dialogue about race and racism both during the session and beyond.

Facilitated by Aristea Saulsbury and Melissa Meiris. Register soon as space is limited. Event registration is sliding scale ($5 - $15) and scholarships are available. If you need a scholarship, please choose the no fee option while registering. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Child care will be provided by the Equity Alliance for the duration of the event thanks to our generous donors. Please indicate whether you will need child care when you register so that we may have adequate coverage.
