This Week's Service:
Let Us Play

Sometimes we equate play with the silly and frivolous.  We almost always talk about it as an age-specific endeavor.  Today, we older folks will contemplate why play matters - not just for our young ones, but for ourselves.
10:30 am. Rev. Celie Katovitch.

This Week's Drop-In Discussion:  14th Amendment.  The 14th Amendment to the Constitution protected the rights of newly-freed slaves by granting citizenship rights to all persons born in the United States.  Now birthright citizenship is being granted to children of unauthorized immigrants.  Harvey Rothbeind will lead a discussion of birthright citizenship, and, time permitting, other aspects of the 14th Amendment.  9:15 a.m.

Throughout the month of October, we will be asking you to confirm or correct the information that we currently have in the church directory.
The directory will be separated alphabetically and set out in the Clara Barton Lounge for you to view after Sunday Services.  Thanks for your help!

UU History Series Continues

Join us this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Clara Barton Lounge for Part 2 of our UU History Series:  European Unitarianism:  Transylvania and Beyond.  If you were not able to attend Part 1, it's ok!  You may come to one or all of the sessions as you can.  Please RSVP so we can plan for enough space and seating:  Michelle Yates at  [email protected].

Come Play with Us!

You are invited on a field trip this Sunday, Oct.11 at noon!  Join us on our Second Sunday Inter-generational Activity where we will be going to the Strong National Museum of Play!  Our First Universalist children are excited to show you around and give you an excuse to come and play!  If you know you are coming please RSVP to Michelle Yates, [email protected]

RURAL & MIGRANT MINISTRY

Harvesting Justice Symposium, Reception & Dinner

Join us at Temple B'rith Kodesh, 2131 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14618 Thursday, October 29, 2015.  First Universalist is represented on R&MM's Board.  We are forming a UU table to lend our voice to advocate for those who, in spite of harsh working conditions, bring food to our tables. The cost of the symposium before the dinner is $50 per person.  The dinner plus reception is $50 extra.  Part of the cost makes it possible for farm workers to join us at the event.  Contact Connie Valk at [email protected] for more details and to make your reservation by October 15 .

Need to use the projector for a meeting or event?

The projector must be signed out prior to its use.  Please contact the church office to check availability and schedule its use. Thank you!
MONTHLY FOOD INGATHERING

This coming Sunday is our next food ingathering for The Community Food Cupboard.  Donations of paper goods and non-perishable food items will be collected during the service on October 11.  Thank you for your generosity!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

WITNESS PALESTINE FILM SERIES - FINAL WEEK:
CALL FOR DELEGATES:  The annual meeting for the
New York State Convention of Universalists (NYSCU) will be held  Oct. 23-24 in Oneonta, NY.   Mark Morrison-Reed will be the keynote speaker.  More information is available here.  First Universalist is entitled to 5 delegates.  If you are interested in being a delegate please contact Nominating Committee co-chairs Shirley Bond or Marcy Klein before October 7.

BREAD SUNDAY:  The breaking of bread together has from time immemorial symbolized a bond of friendship and peace among the participants. We will share bread with each other in our annual observation of Bread Sunday on October 18th.  Members and friends are invited to bring bread for sharing for coffee hour following our regular Sunday service.  Please let Bill Elwell know if you will bring an offering of bread.

Fun bread joke:  Why did Mama Flour and Papa Yeast tell Baby Bread to get a job?
He was loafing around.

Are you bringing a contribution of bread to Bread Sunday?  We would love to share a little about the traditions, family connections, stories, and people connected to your recipe or selection.  If you would like to share a few words about what your bread, or the process of baking it, means to you, please  e-mail Rev. Celie ( [email protected] ) or leave a note in her church mailbox.

NOT MY LIFE:  Sunday, October 18 at 6:30 p.m. at First Universalist Church of Rochester.  Filmed on five continents, in a dozen countries, Not My Life  takes viewers into a world where millions of children are exploited, every day, through an atonishing array of practices including forced labor, domestic servitude, sex tourism, sexual violence, and child soldiering.  Directed by Academy Award nominee, Robert Bilheimer, Not My Life 's message is ultimately one of hope.

EVENING WORSHIP SERVICE:  Friday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m.  Join John Akers and Rev. Celie for an uplifting evening service of singing and sharing. Everyone welcome!

YOU ARE INVITED!  The UU Church of Amherst, along with the UU Church of Hamburg, will be jointly Ordaining Rev. Michelle George Yates (our Director of Lifespan Faith Development) on Sunday, November 1 at 5:00 p.m. at the UU Church of Amherst, 6320 Main Street, Williamsville, NY.  Reception to follow.  Donations of food are welcome.
