  Announcing the Mental Health Matters Day 
T-Shirt Logo Design Contest
 
Mental Health America of California (MHAC) and all of the Mental Health Matters Day (MHMD) partners are pleased to announce the MHMD T-shirt Logo Contest. The contest is sponsored and directly funded by the MHAC and the MHMD partners as part of a collaborative statewide
effort to:

Raise awareness about K-12 student mental health and wellness
Reduce the stigma associated with mental illness
Create nurturing and supportive environments that foster recovery
 
In this contest, middle and high school students are invited to design a logo for the 2020 MHMD T-Shirt.
 
 

 

Governor Newsom Previews $1 Billion in Budget Proposal to Jump-Start New Homeless Fund and Provide Behavioral Health Services

Governor announces the creation of new California Access to Housing and Services Fund in executive order, previews his 2020-21 Governor's Budget with more than $1 billion to fight homelessness, including $750 million for this new Fund, and a major new investment to reform Medi-Cal so that health providers transform health care to deliver integrated physical and behavioral health




California Bills Would Make Insurers Cover More Mental Health
 
California legislators on Tuesday introduced two bills aimed at improving access to mental health and addiction treatment by requiring health insurance companies to authorize some forms of treatment more quickly and to cover more comprehensive mental health services.
 


Newsom Budget Calls for New Early Childhood Department, Boosts Funds for Housing, Mental Health and Foster Care Reform

I n his  second   annual budget proposal  on Friday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom pledged to create a new Department of Early Childhood Development, vowed to pursue substantive behavioral health reforms in California and continued to support major child welfare initiatives from his predecessor, former California Governor Jerry Brown.

The new department would consolidate the work of numerous agencies and programs that serve children and low-income families, including CalWORKS (the state's welfare program), Head Start and Early Head Start, and emergency child care for foster families. Newsom would also increase state preschool funding to include 10,000 more children, as it moves toward a goal of universal preschool for all 4-year-olds from low-income families.


 

Public Health Code of Ethics 

The Public Health Code of Ethics is a set of professional standards and expectations intended for public health practitioners   throughout the field.

In 2002, a code entitled Principles of the Ethical Practice of Public Health was developed by a team of public health practitioners engaged in a project with the Public Health Leadership Society. The American Public Health Association adopted the principles, and they were published in the American Journal of Public Health . 

At that time, it was already recognized that the field of public health was experiencing dynamic growth and that the code would best serve the field if it were occasionally reexamined and possibly revised. Now, as the field of public health enters the era of Public Health 3.0, in which public health practitioners and programs prioritize social determinants for health and interact with a growing diversity of partners, it is important to reexamine and reemphasize public health's commitments to ethical practice and public service.

Matilda White Riley, Ph.D. (1911-2004) Download PDF (634 KB) was a celebrated scientist and member of the National Academy of Sciences whose transformative work and leadership in the behavioral and social sciences at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is honored annually by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR).
 
Each year, NIH honors the research trajectory and continuing influence of Dr. Matilda White Riley in the behavioral and social sciences across and beyond the NIH. Initiated as an annual distinguished scholar lecture, OBSSR expanded the event in 2016 to recognize emerging scientists with a competition for peer-reviewed articles by Early Stage Investigators (ESIs).
