hosts the Buzz Summer Breakfast Series each year as a way of highlighting new initiatives and new leaders making a "Buzz Worthy" impact on our community. These events are open to the public and provide an excellent opportunity for community members at large to get a taste of the Leadership Asheville experience, while also meeting other community leaders. Each event costs $20 and features an engaging panel discussion and includes a hot breakfast.

The Proper Use of Antibiotics

Each year in the United States, more than 2 million people become infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections. In this backdrop of antibiotic resistance, there is a tremendous

(AMS), which, in
a nutshell, is the proper and judicious use of antibiotics, the benefits of which include reducing incidence of antibiotic induced toxicities, reducing the cost of treatment as well as minimizing antibiotic resistance. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), if healthcare providers, hospital administrators, policy makers and patients work together to employ effective AMS programs, patient care can be dramatically improved and more patient lives can be ultimately saved. Come to learn more about theories of the proper use of antibiotics.
Bindu Mayi, M.Sc., Ph.D., is an associate professor of microbiology in the College of Medical Sciences at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Dr. Mayi teaches courses in virology and bacteriology, with emphasis on the medical aspects of infectious disease, for students in the medical, public health and other allied health fields.

2018 OLLI Art Bazaar

egistration is open for the 2018 OLLI Art Bazaar. The Bazaar is s
cheduled for Friday, November 9, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, November 10, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. This year's bazaar will again be a two day format,
and the registration fee is $35/for a single table; $70/for a double table.
Exhibitor registrations are coming in quickly, and space is limited. Don't wait to get your registration sent in. If you are interested in participating or know of an OLLI member who would like to join the fun, let us hear from you!

Dear OLLI Members,
If you are already excited about College for Seniors classes in the fall, be sure to check out the Sneak Peek in this newsletter.
We hope that you will make time this week to see the film screening and discussion based on OLLI member and CFS instructor Rubin Feldstein's experiences fleeing the Holocaust. Rubin has worked with the Center for Diversity Education for years sharing his story with schools. This film, by UNC Asheville graduate Brandon Preister, will help even more people hear Rubin's story. And you will get to hear Rubin in person during the discussion.
We also have lots of music on the schedule for this week, including the final UNC Asheville Concert on the Quad and the final Brevard Music Center Janiec Opera performance this week right here at the Reuter Center.
Finally, many thanks to the Communications Committee for their ongoing series that highlights our dedicated volunteer instructors and thanks to the Civic Engagement Committee for offering information every week about volunteer opportunities. We know the many ways that volunteering does good for the community and offers all kinds of benefits to the volunteer. UNC Asheville Concerts on the Quad 2018
Monday Night, July 16, 7 p.m.
July 16: Rissi Palmer: Southern Soul
The last in this concert series will take place July 16, from 7-8:30 p.m. on the UNC Asheville Quad. Concert-goers are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics to enjoy along with the music. Meals, treats and drinks will be available from concession stands on the Quad.

"You've Got to Be Carefully Taught"

Rubin Feldstein,Yiddish teacher and retired middle school principal, College for Seniors instructor and OLLI lecturer, fled Poland with his family in 1938, barely escaping the fate of 2/3rd's of 9 million European Jews. For the last 15 years Rubin has visited with local school students to share his story of "You've got to be carefully taught." Now a new video will help spread that message to a wider audience and give teachers a valuable classroom tool. The video was created by recent UNC Asheville graduate Brandon Preister as part of classroom work through the Department of Mass Communications.
Join OLLI and the UNC Asheville Center for Diversity Education to view these videos and hear from Rubin about his work in the schools and to hear music from Bandana Klezmer.
This session is free and open to everyone.

Travel Special Interest Group

First presentation will be made by Pat Baker, who will talk about her 13-week-long walking trips in England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Italy, France and Slovenia. According to Pat "It was seeing and experiencing 40-50 miles up close, on foot with a local leader."
During the second presentation Bebe Landis will talk about New Zealand. Here is a quote from her: "Having traveled extensively around the world, I'm often asked to name my 'favorite place.' My top pick, overall, is still New Zealand. Its gorgeous scenery literally brought me and my husband to tears. I've been lucky to be there twice, covering some 2000+ miles around the North and South Islands."
Following each presentation there will be opportunity for Q&A.

Death Cafe'

"Death Café" is an engaging gathering with storytelling and conversation about a topic that too often alienates members of our death phobic culture. A new movement, a shift, is at play in recovering the ritual of being with death through personal storytelling of fears, loss and death. At Death Cafe, participants break into small groups of five to six people and discuss personal stories related to death of loved ones, loss of jobs, relationships or marriages or loss or death of parts of ourselves. Astronomy Club of Asheville

"The Dark Side of the Universe:
Dark Matter in the Galaxy and Cosmos"
The Cosmos abounds with matter that emits copious amounts of light, both in the spectrum of visible colors we perceive with our eyes as well as in invisible light, such as x-rays and radio waves.
But in the last 50 years astronomers have discovered that a significant part of the Universe is filled with matter that doesn't emit ANY light at all. In the last ten years, we have discovered an even more mysterious material that appears to be driving changes in the scale of the Universe.
These dark influences are known as dark matter and dark energy, and can only be perceived by their gravitational influence on all the bright, shining matter we know and love. In this talk, Dr. Larson will discuss why astronomers think the dark matter and dark energy are out there, and explore some of the ideas that may lead to discovering just what it might be.

Volunteer Opportunity: Seek Healing
SeekHealing is
a nonprofit organization that provides free aftercare and integration services to people healing from opioid addiction. Their model is grounded in principles of harm reduction and meaningful human connection that leads to long term healing and ends relapse cycles. Program participants meet weekly with a trained listener for frequent and intentional experiences of shame-free, authentic connection: both people get the chance to be listened to, and listen in return.
Participants also get free introductory access to services, activities and local communities like yoga, basketball, meditation, guitar lessons, improv comedy, dance, martial arts, and other connection-boosting activities.
Seek Healing is looking for volunteers to provide the service of listening to program participants. The organization asks for a 2-4 hour/week commitment: 2 hours for an in-person meeting, and up to 2 additional hours for phonecalls/texting. All volunteers must complete 3 days of training before they can be paired with a seeker.
The next training days will be August 25-26 & September 8.
