TSIC Mentor & Alumni Reunion

On June 20th, the TSIC team held our first annual Alumni & Mentor reunion event at Armature Works in Tampa. Former students and mentors had a great time playing trivia games, eating, reconnecting, and participating in a raffle.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this event. We look forward to being able to have more events like this in the future.

TSIC Students & Mentors Volunteer at the Hillsborough Education Foundation's  Teaching Tools Resource Center

On June 17th, 20 students and mentors spent the morning volunteering at the Hillsborough Education Foundation's Teaching Tools Resource Center. We had a wonderful time preparing journals for students, sorting through pencils, and packing school supplies in boxes for students. It was great opportunity for mentors and students to connect. We'd like to say thank you to everyone who participated and we look forward to spending more time volunteering this summer!

Port of Tampa Educational Harbor Tour

On July 11th, 20 students and mentors spent the morning learning about all of the wonderful things the Port of Tampa has to offer. Learning about the history of the Port of Tampa
and observing the  wildlife all around us was a wonderful experience.

Elisabet Rivera | College Success Coach

Hello! My name is Elisabet Rivera and I am very excited to be joining the Hillsborough Education Foundation and Take Stock in Children team as the newest College Success Coach! I am a USF graduate (Go Bulls!), and I recently completed my second year of service with AmeriCorps as the College Access Coordinator at HOPE Community Center located in Apopka, Florida. I loved my experience working with high school students as I was able to empower them to take ownership of their education as they pursued various career goals. I look forward to bringing what I have learned to the TSIC team and learn from the great people I have the opportunity to work with.

Q: Who was your favorite teacher and why?
A: My favorite teacher was Ms. Redecker, my 5th grade Language Arts teacher. Ms. Redecker was an innovative teacher that used creative ways to engage her students. As a 5th grader I already knew I wanted to work with children in the future, and I remember being so impressed by Ms. Redecker's teaching methods that I would make it a point to take mental notes of the activities she had us do, so I could use them in my own classroom in the future!

Q: What was your first job?
A: My first job was at the Museum of Science and Industry as a birthday party hostess. Every weekend I would get to host different theme birthday parties at MOSI. Some days I got to teach kids about chemical reactions and play with slime, other days we would learn about dinosaurs and create molds of dinosaur teeth. I loved being able to teach students in such a fun environment... and eating lots of cake and ice cream!

Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: If I could have any superpower I would choose teleportation. Like many people, I would love to travel to many different places, but sadly that is not cheap. That is where my teleportation abilities would come in handy! The first place I would visit is Greece.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Like I mentioned in the last question, I would love to go to Greece. Greece is not just a beautiful country surrounded by water (which I love!), but it was a very influential place in ancient times and holds so much history!

Referendum Dollars at Work!

The Hillsborough County school system has started renovating various school sites within the district. There will be an estimated $131 million a year generated by the half-penny sales tax. This project will be completed over the next decade and will address essential district needs including air conditioning, aging roofs, classroom technology and safety and security improvements!

Host a Supply Drive for the Teaching Tools Resource Center this Summer and Support Students in Need

While most kids eagerly begin the school year with a new backpack filled with school supplies, thousands of students who attend Hillsborough County Public Schools will enter the classroom without these critical items.  By hosting a supply drive you will be making a difference in the lives of students in need by giving them the opportunity to begin the school year with their own backpack filled with supplies. Plus, your donations will help us keep the shelves stocked in our Teaching Tools Store, which provides free school supplies to students all school year.

Our TSIC students and families also get to shop in the store for school supplies before school starts and we want to make sure there are plenty of items for them!

Items in High Demand:
  • Multi subject notebooks
  • Index cards
  • Zipper binders
  • Dividers
  • Backpacks (HS level)
