HUNDREDS IN
TIFTON FOR STATE
SWIM MEET
|
|
By BONNIE SAYLES
Tifton Grapevine

Five hundred and thirty
swimmers and their families are descending upon
Tifton
for the
Georgia Recreation and Parks Association
(GRPA)
state Class B swim meet today
and
Saturday
.
Tift County Recreation Department
staff on
Thursday
were
readying
the
pool
and the
grounds
at the
Baldwin Drive Aquatic Center
for the big event.
“They’re all
spending the night
(at
Tifton hotels
),” said
Lindy Bengston
, assistant coach for the
Tiftarea Tidal Wave
team. “
Most
teams were already
here Thursday
.”
Preliminary competition
begins at
9 a.m. today
, and
finals
will be held with the
top eight winners in each event
on
Saturday
. Bengston’s husband
Dustin Bengston
is
head coach
of the
Tidal Wave
, which will field
33 swimmers
in the event.
|
|
Sixteen teams from across the
state will be competing.
Douglas alone is bringing
108 swimmers.
One of the great
improvements with the
pool is that its
water temperature is a lot
cooler than in previous years,
Bengston said. “We are so
thankful to
Tifton Tourism and the
Tift County commissioners who bought
water cannons.”
She said the
water cannons lower the
temperature of the pool water by at least
five degrees by
shooting it
through the air. “They were
ready to pull the meet from us because of
complaints about the
high water temperature,”
Bengston said.
