Meet Our Grade Level Deans!

Ms. Chenia Thate, 6th and 7th Grade Dean

Q:  Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Tennessee.

Q:  Where did you graduate from?
Century Tower on the UF campus in Gainesville where Dean Thate is an alumnus. UF is ranked #34 in the USA among national universities.
I graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science specializing in Physical Education. In addition, I have my Master's degree in Educational Leadership from American College of Education.

Q:  What is your history with OCPS?
I have been with OCPS for 16 years. I came to OCPS straight out of college and began teaching Physical Education at Northlake Park Elementary. The next year I moved to Freedom High School where I also taught Physical Education and Health for seven years and coached Cross-Country, Track & Field and Girl's Weightlifting.  My next two years were at Freedom Middle School and then I moved to West Orange High School as a dean for three years. My past three years, I had the pleasure of working at Memorial Middle School as a dean.

Q:  What do you want our students to know about you?
I am firm, but fair and I enjoy getting to know my students on a personal level. Outside of school, I enjoy spending my time running, working-out and spending time with my daughters. I am also a huge supporter of Special Olympics and I have been involved with the Orange County Special Olympics for 15 years.

Fun Fact:
I have completed more than 65 road races!

Mr. Steven Berson, 8th Grade Dean

Q: Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Q: Where did you graduate from?
I earned my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University, where I lettered in football for 4 years. Go RU!! I also graduated from St. Peter's University with a Master's degree in Educational Leadership.

Rutgers football stadium in New Jersey where Dean Berson played football during all four years of his undergraduate experience.

Q: What is your history with OCPS?
Even though I started my 15 year career as an educator in NJ, the last 3 have been as one of the proud Deans here at LNMS. Throughout my tenure here, I have been honored to serve the Lake Nona community by preparing our students to be the best in OCPS!

Q: What do you want our LNMS students to know about you?
I am a huge sports fan, Yankees, Buccaneers, Knicks and Rangers! I love spending time with my family, especially at Disney! I will constantly challenge and show our students tough love with the expectations of them becoming resilient, innovative but most of all, successful in life!

Q: Fun Fact:
I consider myself a great breakfast cook that loves to incorporate both traditional American and Latin foods into the menu. On the contrary, I receive needs improvement ratings from my family on everything else I cook!

Immunizations for 6th Graders going into 7th Grade

The State of Florida requires all incoming 7th graders to have the Tdap Immunization on the Florida 680 Health Form prior to the start of school. ( floridahealth.gov)

If Lake Nona Middle School does not have the 680 Health Form with the Tdap immunization included on the form, your child will NOT be able to sign out their laptops and/or receive their class schedule for the 2020-21 school year until the updated form is received.

Principal Jackson earns a Doctorate of Education!

Congratulations to Principal Jackson in earning her Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) from the University of Central Florida! The title of her dissertation was " Behavior Specialist Experiences of Roles and Responsibilities in Inclusive Trauma-Informed Schools." This is a major achievement requiring a great deal of dedication and study after having already a master's degree.

The nearby chart was prepared last year by the U.S. Census Bureau. It does a good job of illustrating how over the long-run those holding a doctorate degree remain consistently far fewer than those holding bachelor's degrees or a master's degrees.

OCPS Supports

The Student Services department in collaboration with the Homeless Education department created a new resource for families to gain assistance from the various social and mental health services provided by the district. The new resource is called OCPS Supports. Parents/guardians will be able to complete a short survey with their contact information and the department where they are seeking assistance. A staff member will be in touch with the family within one to two business days.

Summer Reading
LNMS Recommends that ALL students participate in summer reading activities sponsored by OCPS, OCLS, and LNMS! The OCPS programs run to Aug. 10.

*** Beanstack App on Launchpad - Track your reading and win prizes! The Orange County Public Library is offering prizes as well. Students can win a Kindle through OCPS. LNMS will also be offering prizes randomly for usage of Beanstack.  It's easy - all you have to do is track the number of minutes you read throughout the summer!

*** Even though you cannot come to the LNMS Media Center in person this summer, you can request books from Ms. Powers! On the dates listed below, Ms. Powers will be working in the media center getting ready for next school year. All you need to do is email her the name of the book to books you want to read and which time during the day you prefer, and she will check the book out to you and leave it in the front office. You just need to come pick it up!
  • July 7, 8, 14, and 15
Pickup will occur in the front office from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. You must email first to request the book and also receive confirmation back that is ready for pickup in the front office.

*** New SSYRA Books for 2020-2021 will be available this summer. Check on the Destiny app in Launchpad to see when they appear in the New Titles section.  Tests will be available online beginning in July. Check out the new list at click here.
