ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR NOVEMBER 9, 2014:
NEXT SERVICE: Sunday, November 16: A Question of Life and Death: What Do We Live For? Finding meaning in life as we get older. Guest speaker: Libby Moore.
NEXT DROP-IN DISCUSSION: Sunday, November 16: Reproductive Justice. The UUA Study-Action issue for 2012-2016 is reproductive justice, which includes the right of women to choose whether or not to have children, and to raise children in healthy safe environments. Discussions of this subject within individual churches are intended to result in a resolution at the UUA General Assembly in 2016.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Kids ages four and older join us every week in the sanctuary for the first portion of our worship service. Children's Worship begins after the Message for All Ages. Nursery care for babies and younger children is on the second floor provided throughout the service. We also have seating in our second floor foyer, where parents can hold their little ones and listen to the service via speaker.
ARE YOU NEW TO FIRST UNIVERSALIST? Have you come a few times and want to find out more about Unitarian Universalism and our congregation? Then stop by the Welcome Table in the Clara Barton Lounge during coffee hour. You'll find friendly folks there every Sunday who are eager to talk with you!
LAST CALL FOR CHANGE DRIVE! Don't forget to bring that jar of change with you to church on Sunday- it's the last day of our change drive! We'll pool our pennies and other coins to support the programs of our congregation. Look for a member of the finance team in the Clara Barton Lounge before and after the service. Copies of the 2013-14 treasurer's report, as well as information on our upcoming Holiday Shoppe, will also be available.
FOOD INGATHERING is TODAY Sunday, November 9. Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected to benefit The Community Food Cupboard on Nester St.
LADIES WHO LUNCH: Wednesday, November 12 at noon at Pittsford Plaza Wegmans on Monroe Ave. Our format will be a little different this time: fill up your plate at the food bar and pay for it, then take the elevator to the second floor dining area. Karen Dau will come early and set up tables, so some seating will be in place, and we can arrange more as needed.
INSTALLATION CEREMONY of Reverend Celie Katovich is Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at First Universalist Church. A reception will follow the service in the Clara Barton Lounge.
SOCIAL JUSTICE PLATE OFFERING is nextSunday, November 16.The collection will benefit House of Mercy, an organization working to provide (among other things) a homeless sanctuary for those displaced from the Civic Center Garage.
FRIDAY NIGHT COZY SUPPER: November 21, 5:30 pm in the Clara Barton Lounge. Supper, with a vegan option, is provided. This session will focus on the UUA's sixth principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. Sign up on the bulletin board in the Clara Barton Lounge, or contact Kathy Russell 585-544-2643. Your RSVP/Sign Up will allow us to prepare appropriately. Child-friendly activities exploring this principle will be arranged if you make a request one week in advance.
IF YOU ARE NEW to First Universalist or to Unitarian Universalism, we invite you to take part in two orientation sessions designed to help you to become more familiar with both. On November 23, we'll be talking about our faith journeys...where we come from and what brought us to First Universalist. We'll have a conversation about what it means to belong to a liberal faith tradition. On December 7, we'll discuss our order of service and hymn book...the meaning behind different parts of our service and what resources you can find in our hymnal. Both sessions will begin at 12:15 in the Adult Lounge on the second floor and last for about an hour. Child care will be available. Come to one or both sessions. We look forward to getting to know you better.
BOOK GROUP: Sunday November 30 at 12:15 pm in the Adult Lounge. We'll discuss "Orphan Train" by Christina Baker Kline. This is a novel about a search for family which takes the reader on an historical journey starting in NYC and continuing to points west. All are welcome. It would be helpful to have read the book but not necessary. See Sarah Singal or Shirley Bond.
MISSING - one large, dark red tablecloth. This tablecloth was a gift to the church. Maybe you borrowed it and forgot to return it? If you find it, please bring it back to its church home. Thanks!

UNION THANKSGIVING SERVICE: 11:00 am, November 27 (Thanksgiving) at Temple Beth El, 139 Winton Rd. S. Join us for the longest running interfaith Thanksgiving service in the United States. Founded in 1874 by First Universalist, First Unitarian, and Temple B'rith Kodesh, the service has since expanded to include other congregations and faiths.
RAIHN* Needs You! First Universalist's next RAIHN Week is Dec. 14-21 when we will welcome temporarily homeless families to stay in our church for the week. Providing our RAIHN guests with good food and a warm, safe place to stay may be the most significant Christmas gift we give this holiday. Although no RAIHN training is available before our next RAIHN Week, you can still volunteer to help with the following activities without attending training: set up, clean up, launder bedding. If you're unsure what a specific task involves, you can ask us about shadowing a seasoned volunteer.
