FAR Training Helps Young Veterans Open Their Business

Levon Hakobyan, 21, first had the dream of opening his own computer and electronics service center when he started his military service. Now, his dream has become a reality thanks to Fund for Armenian Relief's Non-Formal Education for Returnees Program. "This training helped me to finally make up my mind and spend my time and resources efficiently," remarked the young entrepreneur who opened up his business in December with his brother, Edgar. In partnership with a local NGO, FAR initiated the Returnees Program in 2016 to help young people between the ages of 20 and 22 who have at least two years of military service, to gain new skills. Between March and June of this year, 42 young men took courses in jewelry making, technology, mechanics, carpentry, natural resource production in mining, etc. The three-month courses are usually held twice a year. COMMEMORATION OF ST. GREGORY THE ILLUMINATOR'S SONS AND GRANDSONS -
STS. ARISTAKES, VRTANES, HOUSIK, GRIGORIS AND DANIEL

The calendar of the Armenian Church singles out four members of St. Gregory's family-his two sons, Sts. Arisdagés and Vrtanés, and his grandsons, Sts. Krikoris and Husig-and assigns them a special day of commemoration called "The Feast of the Sons and Grandsons of St. Gregory."
The day of commemoration (according to the present calendar in force since 1774-75) falls on the Saturday before the Third Sunday of Transfiguration. Originally it was observed on the Tuesday following the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost. The feast of the discovery of the relics of St. Krikoris, however, is observed separately on the Monday following the Fifth Sunday of the Exaltation. Excluded from this group of saints are the rest of the members of the Gregorid family, namely Sts. Nersés the Great, Sahag the Parthian, Vartan and his daughter Shushanig. The latter are commemorated on different days during the year.

The Feast of Transfiguration Celebrated at St. Mary

The glorious Feast of Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ was celebrated at St. Mary on July 8. This feast is one of the five Tabernacle feasts of the Armenian Church. It is called the Holy Transfiguration because the appearance of Christ changed and became luminous indicating His divinity and His divine glory. In the Transfiguration, the apostles see the glory of the Kingdom of God present in majesty in the person of Christ. They see that in Him, indeed, "all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,"  and  that "in him, the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily" [Col. 1:19, 2:9]. They see this before the crucifixion so that in the resurrection they might know who it is who has suffered for them, and what it is that this one, who is God, has prepared for those who love him. This is what the Church celebrates in the feast of the Holy Transfiguration.

Blessing of Khatchkar at the Smithsonian

On the concluding day of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, a special service of the Blessing of the Khatchkar took place at the National Mall. The two Khatchkars, one of which was brought from Armenia and the other one carved by an artist from Armenia, Bogdan Hovhannisyan, during the days of the festival, became objects of interest to many visitors.  Prior to the blessing service, Prof. Levon Abrahamian spoke to the audience about the history and significance of Khatchkars. Fr. Simeon Odabashian, Diocesan Vicar, who traveled from New York to preside over the blessing service, briefly explained and talked about the significance of the service of blessing. Participating in the service were also Fr. Sarkis Aktavoukian and Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan.

Khatchkars are unique to Armenia, where they are now a national symbol. Often used to commemorate an important event, mark a significant spot, or serve as a memorial gravestone, khatchkars are typically freestanding upright rectangular stone slabs with a carved cross on the side facing west, so that worshipers and tourists regard them like a rising sun. Sprouting and blooming motifs-which make the khatchkar a version of the Tree of Life-are prominent features

Primate Presides Over International Liturgy Conference

The Primate of the Eastern Diocese, the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan, has been in Presov, Slovakia, this week to preside over the 7th international conference of the Society of Oriental Liturgy. The conference is meeting from July 9 to 13. Fr. Findikyan is a founding member of the society and sits on its board.
In 2016 he was elected president of the society, and was instrumental in bringing together distinguished scholars from around the world for the present conference. Many of these have been teachers of Armenian clergymen pursuing advanced degrees.

The Society of Oriental Liturgy is an international association of scholars specializing in the study of the liturgical traditions of the ancient, eastern churches-including the Armenian Church. It was founded in 2005 under the inspiration and leadership of Robert Taft, S.J., Professor Emeritus of Byzantine Liturgical History at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome-a longtime friend of the Armenian Church and an instructor of a number of its clergymen.

The society meets every two years; the last gathering took place in 2016 at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin in Armenia. The 2014 conference met at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, NY, and included a day of sessions at the St. Vartan Cathedral complex in Manhattan.

10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angelsin heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. 12 "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.
