Tennis Court Updates
Local tennis players will be pleased to know progress is being made with the tennis court renovations at both the Northside Complex and Hyde Park.
Northside Complex renovations have been completed and opened for play on Friday, July 5. Work is currently being completed at the Hyde Park tennis courts and, depending on the weather, the hope is to open those courts by the end of this week or early next week for game play.
Renovation for both tennis courts is being done by Riggs Recreation Equipment, Inc. out of Leawood, Kansas. The new tennis court surface being laid at both facilities is called ProBounce and consists of layers of different types of materials to provide a surface that floats over the existing asphalt surface. By floating over the asphalt surface, Riggs guarantees the new overlay will be good for up to five years. As the underlying asphalt moves and cracks, the overlay will adjust to the changes maintaining a playable surface.
The ProBounce system includes several layers in the process of placing it on the courts. The base layer is similar to artificial turf, consisting of artificial fibers and coated with a soy based urethane resin. This layer is filled with silica granules until the turf-like surface is completely filled. Weather resistant tape and urethane adhesive is applied to the seams to make a solid surface. A resin binder is then applied to the entire surface to bond all the materials together. A coating is applied on top of the layers already in place. One or more layers of a seal coat application follows. Each seal coat application requires a 24-hour minimum time to cure. Once this step has been completed, the edges are made smooth with a 45 degree angle for smooth transition from the pavement around the court onto the tennis court and flexible color surfacing is applied to produce the color of the courts and stripes. This will also require time to cure before the court is ready for game play.
