Fight for Lower Klamath continues
California Waterfowl continues to fight to restore water supplies to the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge - a key breeding and molting hub for California mallards, and an essential staging ground for waterfowl migrating through the Pacific Flyway.

On July 3, CWA Director of Water Policy Jeff Volberg met with agricultural water district managers and the Bureau of Reclamation in Tulelake to discuss delivering water from the Klamath Project to LKNWR this fall. The district managers made clear to Reclamation that they expect any water remaining after the irrigation season to be delivered to the refuge.

The refuge’s Unit 2 is currently flooded from a water transfer, and should still be flooded during hunting season.

CWA will continue fighting to keep America's first national wildlife refuge for waterfowl from becoming a duck desert, and will keep members apprised of any progress we make. Mallard breeding population down this year
California’s breeding population of mallards is down 12% over last year, and down 28% over the long-term average, according to a state Department of Fish and Wildlife survey released last month.

We don’t yet have the continental breeding population estimates, but for mallards, gadwall and cinnamon teal, it’s the California breeding population that matters most: Studies show about 70% of those birds that we harvest in California hatched in California.

The survey is conducted by air over the same geographic areas year after year, and always around the same late April and early May dates. It is not a complete census of waterfowl in the state, and it doesn’t reflect what people may be seeing on the ground today. But it remains a critical tool for tracking year-to-year trends.
