Loved and Not A Burden
by Shelly Slaczka

As caregivers we notice that our loved one often feels like a burden and does not always feel the love that they should. Healing the body is linked with healing the soul and it is the soul that suffers when people are not treated with love or do not feel it. The emotional pain for the person who is ill often feels worse than the physical pain. As a caregiver, it is important that you are aware of how the person you are taking care of is reacting to your interaction. Physical and emotional touch can bring comfort and help a person feel accepted.

Showing concern and awareness as a caregiver for the loved one with a chronic illness shows that you believe them. Some illnesses will leave a person outwardly looking healthy but they can still be in chronic pain or experiencing chronic symptoms. People have a hard time believing these individuals are sick at all. It is easy for us to show doubt which increases the feeling of burden and makes your loved one feel alone. Battle this feeling by thinking about what your loved one is feeling and experiencing and behave in such a manner that you would like. Let them know you see how hard they are trying and how strong they are to combat their illness. Simple acknowledgement helps the person feel comforted and eases their burden.

ABC11 is teaming up with contributor Nicole M. Bruno to provide you with support and resources for taking care of an aging loved one.

You can meet Nicole and other caregivers on our Facebook group

ABC11's Caregivers Corner is a place where you can connect with fellow people giving long term care to a loved one, be it a grandparent, parent or sibling. This group is moderated by ABC11 and Nicole. Please share this page and help connect caregivers with important content that will help them in their caregiving journey!

It is our distinct pleasure to introduce you to our new Referral Specialist, Julie Keely.

Julie was raised in a caregiving family observing the challenges and rewards of her mother caring for her grandmother and of her father caring for her mother. No doubt this impacted her career in healthcare administration and senior care. Julie's career began at UNC Memorial Hospital as an Emergency Room Clerk and Medical Clinic Financial Counselor then she continued to build and manage a Customer Service Department for the start-up HealthAmerica/Maxicare - one of the first HMOs in the area. After spending three seasons as a Campaign Associate for United Way of the Greater Triangle and learning of the impact made by non-profits, Julie discovered her passion for working with seniors and spent the next seven years as the Transportation Coordinator for The Center for Volunteer Caregiving. Here she coordinated volunteers to provide transportation for seniors for doctors' appointments and other necessary trips and learned of the special needs of seniors and their caregivers and of the resources available to them. After a year spent marketing in the private duty homecare industry she is excited to be able to share her knowledge and compassion as the Referral Specialist for Transitions GuidingLights.
