Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,

Happy Summer! Before you know it will time for the very best event of the summer -- Safe Harbor's Labfest 2019 to raise funds for the medical care of our rescue friends, like Rudy who's being treated for heartworms and Miss Gerdy, who needed surgery for a painful knee injury. We're loveable, but sure get ourselves into a bundle trouble. Thank goodness for Safe Harbor and their generous supporters!

Best Wags and Wishes!

LabFest 2019: Labs Just Wanna Have Fun!
Woof and Hi Safe Harbor Families!

A bunch of my Lab buddies and me are beggin' ya in true Lab fashion to take us to Safe Harbor's LabFest 2019.  After all, you've got the car keys and a wallet! Through the "Twilight Howl" we hear the Silent Auction is gonna be awesome -- almost as good as the brats we plan on stealing off the BBQ.  In case you didn't know, it'll help raise funds for our fellow rescued Labs' medical care, Labs like Gerdy who needed knee surgery, Charlie a senior in hospice care, and Rudy who was shot in the leg and needs treatment for heart worm.

So you folks who love us and have opposable thumbs,
register  us right away!

Advice on all matters Labby for both four and two-legged folks.

Gentle Readers - Most of us have canine friends who have battled one kind of cancer or another. We Labs are no strangers to this disease, especially as we enter our middle and senior years. But there is exciting news about a study for a cancer preventative vaccine, and maybe you can even be part of it!

As part of the largest interventional canine clinical trial ever conducted, veterinarians leading the Vaccine Against Canine Cancer Study seek to enroll 800 healthy, middle-aged pet dogs to evaluate the effectiveness of a new cancer prevention vaccine. Forty-five breeds are eligible, including Labrador Retrievers. Click here to learn more about this exciting study.

New Beginnings: Jake
When Dwight and his Lab girl, Tia, were ready to add a new four-legged family member, three-year-old Clayton made sure he was first in line to apply for the position.  With his magnificent mug, exemplary social graces, and winsome waggery, Clayton wowed and woofed his way into their hearts and soon had claimed them as his very own.
Clayton's new dad sent us an update on this handsome pup:

Clayton has pretty much settled into his new home no problem.  Clayton and Tia get along great. I got Tia from Safe Harbor several years ago.   Clayton likes ropes but is mediocre at playing tug-a-war ... mostly he wants to chew on it in your lap.  Like all dogs and Labs he likes a good rub down.  Tia likes the dog park, Clayton loves the dog park, and he runs the whole time, rain or snow or shine.  After Clayton recovered from neutering we started going on three to six-mile walks ... we had to work Clayton up to the six miles over two weeks, but now he is a champ walker just like Tia.  They have to deal with me being gone on workdays, but so far no issues with separation anxiety or anything else honestly. Great dogs -- I am spoiled.  We will start summer camping soon, and I think Clayton will really love that.

Many thanks to Ronda and Steve for fostering Clayton!
Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy and Dan Griffee
Kathy and Dan Griffee just celebrated their 4th anniversary fostering for Safe Harbor!  After they adopted Lilah, a chocolate Lab from us, they came to realize she would be a great foster sister for other Labs in need.  After she passed away, they continued to foster and soon adopted Shoni. To date they have fostered 37 Labs!

A favorite foster was their third, a 100 pound black Lab named Max. They heard from the new family that he thought he was the Big Dog in town until he met the family's horses.

Shane, another foster, had been bounced around before he found his way to them. He decided enough was enough and that he didn't need a new forever home, he already found it.  Now, Kathy tells us, Shane happily sits at the top of the stairs and does a song and dance for them every morning!

Kathy shared some advice for those thinking about volunteering: "You would think it's hard to give a dog up after fostering, but knowing that the Lab will go to a good new home makes it easier. Safe Harbor is a great organization with a top notch adoption team that does a great job of matching the family with the Lab." She works at CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital and relates she often hears compliments about Safe Harbor.

Dan and Kathy enjoy hearing about their fosters once they go to their forever home. To remember each one, they take photos and enjoy looking back at them - all 37!

Thank you, Kathy and Dan!
