Executive Director’s Message

Greetings veterinary diagnosticians! I hope your summer is going well and that you all enjoyed some downtime over the Fourth of July holiday. Efforts are in full swing regarding our annual meeting preparations. Program Chair, Dr. Deep Tewari, reported that over 150 abstracts were submitted for presentations and posters. In addition, several exciting and professionally useful pre-meeting symposia are now scheduled… check them out on the website and via registration announcements. Registration is now officially OPEN! Remember, current active membership ensures huge valuable discounts for meeting registration.

However, most importantly your membership allows you to serve and grow professionally on the many AAVLD committees, provides journal access and opportunities to stay in touch with other diagnosticians. Committee service is so vital to our organization and profession, and allows us to advocate for our discipline and progress with the times. Welcome!

For many years, your AAVLD Executive Board has enjoyed an AVMA liaison member. I am glad to report that the AVMA has appointed a new person in this role; Dr. Gail Golab replaces Dr. Christine Hoang on our board. Gail Golab, PhD, DVM, MANZCVS, DACAW brings a broad array of experiences to us. She is currently the Chief Veterinary Officer for the AVMA. She has several years of private practice experience as well as several years of AVMA leadership responsibilities. She has been involved more than 30 years in the human-animal interactions field, including research and policy development. Please read more in the attached bio-sketch. I’m sure you’ll agree that we will benefit by her joining our AAVLD management team. You may welcome her at GGolab@avma.org .

This month’s focus is on an article in the upcoming July issue: “Zinc overload in weaned pigs: tissue accumulation, pathology, and growth impacts” by Eric R. Burrough, Carson De Mille, and Nicholas K. Gabler

Abstract. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is commonly fed to pigs at pharmacologic concentrations (2,000–3,000 ppm) for the first 3 wk post-weaning to increase growth and reduce enteric bacterial disease. The safety of this high-dose treatment is assumed based upon lower bioavailability of ZnO compared to other common forms of Zn in feed; however, limited data are available regarding the specific serum and tissue concentrations of Zn expected in animals experiencing overload following feeding of excessive ZnO. Fifty-five 3-wk-old pigs were divided into 5 groups receiving various concentrations of ZnO (0–6,000 ppm) for 3 wk. Pigs receiving 6,000 ppm ZnO had higher mean pancreatic Zn concentrations (p < 0.001) compared to other treatments, and higher pancreatic Zn concentrations were associated with pancreatic acinar cell apoptosis (p < 0.0001). Hepatic Zn concentrations were highest for pigs receiving 6,000 ppm ZnO (mean ± SEM; 729 ± 264 ppm) and significantly higher than all other groups (p < 0.0001), with controls having concentrations <60 ppm. Similarly, serum Zn was highest in pigs receiving 6,000 ppm ZnO (4.81 ± 2.31 ppm) and significantly higher than all groups (controls, <1 ppm). Additionally, as pigs became overloaded with Zn, there were significant reductions in serum Cu and both serum and hepatic Se. Hepatic and serum Zn concentrations >500 ppm and >2 ppm, respectively, are indicative of Zn overload, and dietary trace mineral analysis is warranted if expected inclusion rates are ≤3,000 ppm ZnO.

AAVLD Represented at WAVLD International Symposium

Several AAVLD members were spotted in attendance during the 19 ^th International Symposium of the World Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (WAVLD), held recently in Chiang Mai Thailand. WAVLD Executive Director Barb Martin and the host country were extremely gracious to all attendees. Thailand is indeed the land of smiles. Dr. Matti Kiupel gave numerous pathology presentations to the group (they were excellent). Dr. Jerry Saliki posted a scientific poster and served on an expert panel. Dr. David Zeman presented “The USA Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory System and the Role of the AAVLD”. AAVLD Executive Board member Dr. Jerry Saliki and Dr. David Zeman were invited to meet with the WAVLD Executive Board to discuss ideas for future collaboration between AAVLD and WAVLD. Dr. Craig Carter was honored for his many years of past service as Executive Director of the WAVLD. It was also learned that both Dr. Carter and Dr. Saliki are outstanding dancers! Barb Martin invites all AAVLD members to mark their calendars to attend the next ISWAVLD meeting in Lyon France, June 2021.

AAVLD Participates in USDA/NBAF Stakeholder and Partnerships Conference

Leadership of the USDA’s National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) held a conference in Kansas City, MO on May 22-23, 2019.

The conference was attended by more than 100 individuals from various governmental agencies, research facilities, biopharmaceutical companies, agriculture commodity interest groups, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, advocacy groups, and congressional representatives.

The stated goals of the conference were to:

· Provide NBAF stakeholders and partners with updates on the progress of NBAF construction and the Operational Plan for the facilty

· Discuss collaborative efforts

· Gather feedback to elaborate an NBAF science program that corresponds to stakeholder’s priorities

The NBAF will allow the USDA to rapidly respond to the needs of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) through expansion of their current capabilities.

AAVLD greatly appreciates the efforts of USDA leadership and the opportunity to participate in discussions regarding the critical activities of NBAF.

Anatomic and clinical pathologists are invited to submit cases for the Diagnostic Pathology Slide Seminar. Necropsy, surgical pathology, or cytology cases that present a diagnostic challenge, represent an emerging disease, or exemplify a classic condition are solicited.
