A Message from Our CEO, Janet Van Dyke, DVM, DACVSMR.
Registration is now open for our very popular Canine Sports Medicine course, September 16-18 at our Littleton, Colorado, facility. Dr. Chris Zink will cover the common injuries seen in canine sports, the training techniques that can be employed to prevent injuries, rehabilitation techniques to regain peak performance in our working and competing dogs, and so much more. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to learn from a world-renowned expert, author, and past president of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Are you interested in offering orthoses for your patients but don’t know where to start? Are you already using orthoses in your practice but challenged by how to make necessary adjustments or alterations to the devices? We have the course for you! Our Veterinary Orthoses and Prostheses course will be taught by Patsy Mich, DVM, DACVAA, DACVSMR, who has over 15 years experience and success in prescribing, developing, and adjusting veterinary orthoses and prostheses. Our plan is to add this course to the calendar for this fall. If you are interested in attending, please email us at info@caninerehabinstitute.com, and we will add you to the interest list.
While we have been busy updating our curriculum and looking at additional opportunities for CE, we have also been hard at work behind the scenes developing our faculty. Our Teaching Assistant In Training (TAIT) program, coordinated by Senior Faculty Member Amber Kenney, prepares interested CCRTs and CCRVNs to join the CRI team. They start by participating in our Zoom classes. With sufficient experience in this role, TAITs can then join our in-person lab sessions, shadowing faculty and TAs. I encourage all CCRTs and CCRVNs who think they would enjoy working with our students and sharing their personal experience to sign up for this wonderful program by emailing us at info@caninerehabinstitute.com.
We continue to monitor COVID metrics as they slowly improve in Colorado. Our instructors are starting to be vaccinated, giving us hope that before too many more months go by we will be able to return to larger class sizes. This should help us clear the backlog of veterinarians, physical therapists, and veterinary nurses wanting to pursue certification. Until then, we appreciate everyone’s patience. Our plan is to return to our teaching facility in sunny Florida in November with full in-person classes. Fingers crossed!
Thank goodness we are finally getting closer to that normal life which we all took for granted. In the meantime, be well and stay safe.

Join Us This Spring for Acupuncture Certification!
Our upcoming modules are filling up, so register or contact us to join our interest list. Acupuncture modules are held in person in Littleton, Colorado, with small groups and social distancing.
We are limiting class size to 10 students to allow for social distancing and will notify registrants of any changes at least 30 days prior to the start of each module. If you have already started acupuncture certification, please contact us so we may help you register for the remaining modules and finish your certification as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncture Therapist!

Register Now for Upcoming 2021 Courses!
Registration is open for many spring and summer courses, and our class rosters are filling up! Many of our core rehabilitation courses will be held in a hybrid format with Zoom online learning sessions and small, in-person lab sessions.
Our June Clinical Skills and July Clinical Applications modules have only a few seats open. If you are working on CCRT certification and want to finish your coursework this summer, register now! Register for both modules together with a 2-course package, and save $150. The Clinical Applications module will not be offered again until December, so register now to ensure your seat in the class.

All Veterinarians May Now Earn CE Credits Through Our CRI Member Library! |

Our CRI Member Library is now open to all veterinarians! During this time when it is difficult to get CE credits due to travel restrictions, the CRI Member Library is a great way to fulfill most states' current continuing education requirements!
For $795, students can have unlimited access for one year to our CRI Member Library! The CRI Member Library includes 60+ hours of RACE-approved online courses taught by our expert faculty - and content continues to grow! Our Current Techniques in Canine Pain Management course has just been updated and is now available again in the CRI Member Library.
Already have a subscription to the CRI Member Library? Renew your annual subscription for a $250 renewal fee! We have added hours of continuing education content this year and will continue to add more online content in early 2021.
All veterinarians can subscribe to the CRI Member Library. Physical therapists and veterinary technicians/nurses that have successfully completed Introduction to Canine Rehabilitation (including the exam) can subscribe. CCRPs are also welcome to subscribe. Veterinary technicians/nurses need to submit a valid Employment Agreement Letter.

The Effects of Photobiomodulation on Canine Elbow Osteoarthritis.
The Study: This prospective clinical study evaluated the effect of photobiomodulation therapy vs. sham on the use of NSAIDS and lameness in 20 dogs with naturally occurring elbow osteoarthritis. 20 dogs were randomly assigned to either the treatment group (10-20 J/cm2 to the elbow joints) or the sham group (0 J/cm2 to the elbow joints). Treatment was completed for 6 weeks. The treatment group showed significant improvements in pain score, lameness scores, and lowering the NSAID requirement compared to the placebo group.
Study Limitations: Per the authors, the inclusion criteria reflected the clinical heterogeneity of elbow OA, the study had a small sample size, inability to standardize pre-existing NSAIDs, and possible biological effects of the sham laser.
Impact on Clinical Practice: This study suggests higher doses of laser therapy, 10-20 J/cm2, may be effective in treating some of the clinical signs associated with osteoarthritis in canine patients.

PT Students: You Can Now Register for Rehabilitation Certification Courses Before Completing Your Degree.
Attention, physical therapists and PT students! You can now register for CRI courses during your final year in PT school and start your certification as a canine rehabilitation therapist as soon as you have graduated and are licensed! We will NO LONGER require that you graduate before registering for courses. This will allow you to achieve your dream of working with animals much sooner!
Physical therapy students can register for any courses that licensed physical therapists can take, but you cannot start the courses until you graduate and are licensed. To become certified as a CCRT, you must complete the three required courses plus a 40-hour internship. In addition, you must have completed one year of clinical experience in human physical therapy after receiving your PT license.

In late January and early February, we hosted two groups of students for Clinical Skills in-person sessions at Colorado Veterinary Specialty Group's new facility in Littleton, Colorado. All students followed social distancing guidelines and stayed 6 feet apart, except when taking quick class photos. Congratulations to these great groups of students! We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Sometime around 14 years ago, a small, brown, wild animal arrived at the little shelter on the corner. Her hairs were sunburned, moth-eaten, and dense from nary seeing a brush.
At this same time, there was a human in search of a pretty, small dog that could be a model to help with the human’s canine rehabilitation business.
The little shelter on the corner contacted the human about the arrival of said small brown dog, and she put the wheels in motion to have the little brown evaluated by her sister, a dog behavior expert, to make sure she would be a good fit for the human and her black lab Quinn.
Upon arrival at the shelter, the sister exclaimed, “Well, she is not pretty” but rather she was quite cute in her very own way. And on this fateful day, that small, brown, wild animal joined the loving home of CRI Senior Faculty Member Sasha Foster, and she became the one and only Mimzy Buttercup Brown Foster.
With Sasha’s endless care and organic kibbles, Mimzy did flourish. Her coat became shiny and smooth, her prance became more pronounced and her giant character in a small, stout package became more and more evident. As a dog school drop-out, she was able to remain a small, brown wild animal with a rather fancy name, because she preferred it that way. In her years with Sasha, the two have become the dearest of friends and speak that secret language that only occurs between two beings that know each other well.
Mimzy has been Sasha’s business partner and has played a significant role in teaching Canine Rehabilitation Institute students. Recently declaring her retirement from regular work as a Dog Professor, Mimzy has been granted the title of Dog Professor Emeritus at CRI.
This month, Mimzy is also our Breezie Demo Dog Award Winner! In recognition of this honor, Mimzy will receive a $50 gift certificate from Jiminy's good for any of their treats or dog food. Congratulations to Mimzy and Sasha! Enjoy your yummy Jiminy's treats!

The Breezie Demo Dog of the Month Award is given in memory of Breezie, who was the lead demo dog for our Coral Springs courses for more than 9 years and helped to educate more than 800 veterinary and physical therapy professionals. She was such a great demo dog that our faculty would beg to have her in their small group sessions. Breezie's favorite holiday was Halloween when she was always the best dressed dog in Coral Springs!
