South River Project Featured in Fire Chief Video

The August 2013 online edition of Fire Chief Magazine features a video interview with Mitchell Associates that focuses on what it takes to work with local officials and the community to move a project forward. The video - Take a Closer Look at the South River Fire Headquarter Station - details the steps taken by the District during two years of design development. Patience paid off - the result is an advantageous site in a central location, a firematically correct program, and community support. Beukendaal Gets Voter Approval

Renovations and additions to the Beukendaal Fire Station have won public approval with 68% of votes cast in favor. The District engaged in a public outreach campaign that included letters to residents, news articles, an explanation of the project on the District's website, and evening information sessions for the membership and the public. The information sessions featured PowerPoint illustrations of the history of the project, reasons why, and the proposed building changes. The emphasis was on improved safety for the volunteers and the community and the ability to accommodate up-to-date equipment and trucks. The station houses fire, EMS and water rescue services. Construction is expected to begin in early spring, 2014.

East Putnam Breaks Ground

Construction has begun for the new East Putnam (CT) Fire Station. The District worked with the USDA to secure funding for a 13,062 sq ft building that will replace a 3,132 sq ft facility built in the 1950's. The new station will be located on a 21 acre parcel that's more centrally located. It's expected that response times will be reduced by an estimated 3-4 minutes. The station will be built to last, with a steel and masonry structure that can withstand New England weather and intensive use, and innovative wood wall construction in the office area that will have R-32 insulation. Completion is expected in summer, 2014.
