Quality  Burgundy Sought. Extreme Value Delivered.

French wine lovers know that "great quality" and "value" are expressions rarely used together to describe a bottle of Burgundy. With international demand for top tier red Burgundy surging, pricing on these beautiful small production Pinot Noirs continues to be pushed ever higher. It is not exactly front page news to say that finding a great bottle of Burgundy at a decent price is, well, difficult.

Today, thanks to our connections in Burgundy and an unusually efficient supply chain, we present you with a pair of Premier Cru red Burgundies that do indeed deliver that magical combination of quality and price. A  Premier Cru Maranges below $30? Yep. Premier Cru Volnay under $50? Got that too, and it is delicious!

2017 Domaine Quentin Jeannot "La Fussière" 1er Cru
Maranges, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quentin Jeannot is the second generation of his family to make wine. We met this baby-faced vigneron two years ago in his tiny cellar in Burgundy and have been carefully following his wines ever since. The 1er Cru bottling we feature today comes from his holdings in the lesser known region of Maranges.
Maranges sits at the very southern end of the Côte de Beaune, immediately below Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet. The most famous vineyard there is La Fussière, a 1er Cru property where Quentin sustainably farms the low yielding 60-year-old vines that produce this lovely Pinot Noir.
The 2017 provides terroir driven notes of savory wild game along with smoky, roasted herb and earth notes, all atop a red berry core. Bright and richly textured, it gives legit Burgundy structure with medium-plus acidity and medium tannins forming a solid backbone. If it were $45, most Burgundy drinkers wouldn't bat an eye. Earning a SOLID 92 points on our scale, and selling for under $30, t his is the kind of wine that debunks the over-priced Burgundy argument.
Drink now with a 60 minute decanting or hold for in your cellar for a few more years. This will be gorgeous in 2022 and will continue to improve throughout the decade. If you are on the lookout for Burgundy that packs flavor and structure far beyond its price, this one is the real deal!
2017 Domaine Georges Glantenay "Le Ronceret" 1er Cru
Volnay, Burgundy, France
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are thrilled with this wine. It is a serious quality Pinot, and is extraordinarily inexpensive for 1er Cru Volnay.

Operating from a modest cellar in the charming commune of Volnay, fourth generation vignerons Guillaume and Sarah Glantenay do EVERYTHING by hand. They craft this wine from their 0.3 hectare parcel of 65-year-old vines in  Le Ronceret, a small Premier Cru vineyard that sits just below Champans, one of Volnay's most famous vineyard sites.

The first taste confirms this as a serious bottle of Pinot Noir. On the nose and in the mouth, open flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, coffee, vanilla, red earth and chalk reveal themselves. The supple texture, velvety mouthfeel and densely packed middle are most impressive.  The finish is generous and long, with tense minerality. We are a strong 94+ points on this one.  Great Burgundy is all about texture and terroir, and this is great Burgundy.

Delicious now, this classic red will ideally rest for another 3 to 5 years and will drink beautifully through 2030. While there are no listings for this wine in the US, you can find it in the UK for $56 and the 2015 vintage is available for $70 in Hong Kong. What an awesome bottle of Pinot Noir this is!
