Update from the Executive Director

Have you settled into the lazy hazy days of summer? Or do you find yourself busier than ever? My baby turns 11 months old today and as of this week, is officially a crawler! Perhaps you've heard the expression that the days pass slowly, and the years fly by. (What you might not know is--some scientists believe time passes more slowly for flies.)  Whatever your "critical flicker fusion frequency" is, time is passing.

I am looking forward to attending the Village to Village Network Annual Gathering in Chicago this fall along with several Mill City Commons members. This year's theme is "Connecting Generations." I am curious to see what kind of connections are presented and which ideas are generated. The New York Times series entitled "The New Retirement" includes this article, which describes the concept of "mentor elders." Chip Conley, author of Wisdom at Work, writes that everyone "needs to become a mentor elder, simultaneously sharing wisdom while embracing fresh ideas and ways of thinking." Sounds like some people I know! (Also, a little fun with the Rolling Stones and annuities.) As we begin revising the MCC strategic plan in the coming months, we can consider our inter-generational connections.

Whether you're a Reader, a River Walker, or a Rendezvous-er, I hope the pace you're on feels good to you. We have lots of activities coming up. One way to slow down our perception of time is to try something new. Check out our calendar and consider attending a program for the first time. Let me know if you do, and if time stretches out!

Thanks for staying connected with Mill City Commons. Happy Summer!

MILL CITY COMMONS: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

MCC Evening Book Club
Tuesday, July 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
RiverWest Social Room, 401 S 1st St
Join us to discuss Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. George Washington Black, or "Wash," an 11-year-old field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is terrified to be chosen by his master's brother as his manservant. To his surprise, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. Soon Wash is initiated into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky, where even a boy born in chains may embrace a life of dignity and meaning--and where two people, separated by an impossible divide, can begin to see each other as human. But when a man is killed and a bounty is placed on Wash's head, Christopher and Wash must abandon everything. What follows is their flight along the eastern coast of America, and, finally, to a remote outpost in the Arctic. What brings Christopher and Wash together will tear them apart, propelling Wash even further across the globe in search of his true self.  Listen here to an insightful interview by Fresh Air's Terry Gross with Esi Edugyan on Washington Black.

NOTE: Limited guest parking is available in the RiverWest garage. Register your car in the building lobby. There's also a pay lot on the woonerf between the Abiitan and Mill City Quarter buildings (on the back side of RiverWest) that's available for public parking from 6-10 pm Mon-Fri. Note that the parking meters are not owned by the city and the city parking app can NOT be used with them. Pay at the station in the lot.

The MCC Evening Book Club usually meets on the first Tuesday of every other month. Upcoming gatherings are on September 3 and November 5.

MCC Women Connect
Thursday, July 18, 10:00 - 11:30 am
Lourdes Square, 174 Bank St SE
At this month's MCC Women Connect, Beverly Fitzgerald will lead a discussion around the question, "Is it my imagination or are others treating me differently as I get older?" Family members, doctors, nurses, clerks-- they're often more helpful than necessary. When you hear, "How are you today, young lady?", do you find yourself flattered or annoyed? Is it ageism or kindness? Respect or condescension? How should one respond?

MCC Women Connect's purpose is to gather to connect and grow, sharing our experiences and learning from each other as we adapt to life's changes and transitions. Discussion ideas come from members, volunteer facilitators and a list of suggestions being developed. We meet once a month, from 10:00-11:30 a.m., on the third Thursday.
