Membership at St. Brendan's
As we approach the annual meeting later this month, it is perhaps useful to point out how one becomes a legal member of St. Brendan's. You will note that even if you are a member of some other congregation you can be a member of St. Brendan's as well (I make sure you are not "double counted" when the annual Parochial Report is submitted). Membership requires four things under Maine law and the bylaws: (1) attaining Age 15, (2) being a "stated worshipper" for three months, (3) being a "stated contributor" for three months and (4) signing a declaration that you wish to be a member. The second and third criteria in practice is "self-monitored" and the first is a quaint non-issue for all who are reading this passage. Thus, the only "objective" criterion is to sign the declaration. Please contact me, and I will be happy to provide it for you to sign.

St Brendan's Pastoral Care Ministry is available to help offer prayers and support in time of need. Please reach out and let us know if you or someone you know would like to be included on the prayer list, have a Eucharistic visit after church on Sunday, or need any help with transportation or meals during difficult times. Many of us want to offer help to others, but are uncomfortable asking for such help for ourselves. It is a blessing for all of us in our community when we can share both good times and difficult times. Please let us know if there is a need.

Mick Delap has sailed the Atlantic coast of Ireland over the last 14 years, sailing to several sites associated with St. Brendan. He will be sharing poems written about these and other voyages.

Community Conversations
As part of its Community Conversation Series, the Outreach Committee of St. Brendan the Navigator organized two talks at the church.
The Committee is grateful to Carolyn Mor for introducing the congregation to the nuts and bolts activities of Volunteers for Hancock Jail Residents, VHJR. Carolyn and her colleagues, Jean Hendrick and Jim Bergin, talked about the opportunity to bring hope to the community and to the incarcerated through its restorative justice efforts and by helping to staff and maintain the prison library and writing program. On June 23rd, the Outreach Committee invited Tracey Hair, executive director of H.O.M.E., to share the phenomenal work she does with another population in need, Maine's homeless. The organization is part of the world Emmaus Movement, started in France in 1949 by Abbe Pierre, a Franciscan priest. Central to its mission is the effort to "help people help themselves."
As with the prisoner population, the primary causes of homelessness include poverty, chemical addiction, and mental illness. H
If you are interested in joining with other parishioners who would like to support these organizations, please contact the Outreach Committee. Perhaps a group of us can volunteer! Perhaps we can host a crafts fair! Checks designated to the organizations can also be sent to St. Brendan's as part of our Outreach effort. Fourth Sunday after Pentecost:
Today's liturgy holds up before us the call to go into the world to proclaim the gospel of the crucified and risen Lord. Luke's account of Jesus' sending out seventy of his disciples to announce the Kingdom of God is also a call to us. We were first called and commissioned in our baptism when we promised to strive to live as disciples of Christ, and promised to proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ.
The first reading from Isaiah foresees God gathering all the faithful people of the earth into the Kingdom. God, like a mother who comforts her children, will protect the faithful in the coming tribulation. This passage is reflective of later Old Testament insight, which sees the conflict between good and evil in history as foreshadowing the end times. Jesus' own proclamation, carried by the seventy and by us, is that history is approaching its end, and all people are called into God's Kingdom in preparation for that end.
The second reading is the conclusion of the letter to the Galatians. Paul insists that those who demand outward signs of faith have failed to see that the true outward sign of faith is Christ's crucifixion and the change in our way of living which faith in Christ crucified brings. That faith produces people who will proclaim Christ and struggle against those evils in this world that destroy human life.
The conclusion of every liturgy is a dismissal, a sending forth of all God's people. Again, in the dismissal today, we hear Jesus sending us out as he did the seventy, to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom and to heal all who suffer.

We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, Graham, and Caleb.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
