Department Store of the Future to open in Manhattan

Neighborhood Goods is bringing its department store of the future model to the Big Apple.

The company announced it will open its second location to date, in Manhattan's Chelsea Market. Opening in fall 2019, the store will feature its own restaurant concept specific to the local and ever-changing selection of brands and products relevant to the New York market.

Neighborhood Goods made its debut in late 2018, at Legacy West in Plano, Texas. The 14,000-sq.-ft. store features a diverse and ever-changing array of contemporary brands, products, events, and services. Since launch, Neighborhood Goods has expanded its line-up to feature more than 35 brands, including Rothy's, Taschen, Stadium Goods, Buck Mason, Draper James, Primary and more.

The retailer will begin revealing its New York City launch partners over the coming months on its social channels, in addition to the release of more information about its upcoming restaurant concept.

"We're incredibly proud to be opening at Chelsea Market later this year," said Matt Alexander, co-founder and CEO of Neighborhood Goods. "We had been thinking of New York as a later target for us, but when the opportunity arose to join such a prominent and creative community, we couldn't pass it up. Not only is it a vibrant marketplace in and of itself, but it's also located within a neighborhood that's in high demand for brands and consumers alike. It's a perfect introductory vehicle for us into such a special city."

Headquartered in Dallas, Neighborhood Goods is designed as a modern alternative to - and evolution of - the department store. It makes it easy for brands to set up shop and rotate in and out, offering a variety of leasing and space options.
Ooh Baby! Designing With No Rules

Every Saturday and Sunday from nine a.m. to five p.m., Anika Ignozzi sets up shop on the corner of 20th and Penn Ave. in the Strip District. Her clothing store, Ooh Baby!, is a collection of upcycled clothing that has been hand-painted and sewn to create one of a kind pieces.

Ignozzi believes the sky's the limit when it comes to her designs. The most important aspect of her creations is that they are original and give an experience of clothing people haven't seen before. Ignozzi's goal is to make people feel good about themselves and to love what they wear.

Her "wearable art" is eye-catching. Ignozzi's designs are meant to be one of a kind conversation starters. While her pieces catch the attention of passersby, she also becomes a talking point. Ignozzi brings her sewing supplies to her pop-up shop and works on new garments so others can see her process. Working in her shop, she welcomes people to ask questions about sewing and making customized clothes.

"Everything comes straight from my brain," she said. "I just relax and let loose. I try to create a contrast between colors that aren't normally on clothing." She uses wild colors and paints abstract faces and shapes to make pieces stand out.

An item that appeals to a variety of customers is her reworked Rolling Stones vest. Reworked clothing, she said, is cutting apart fabric and attaching it to other clothing that it normally wouldn't make sense with. Taking clothes from local thrift stores, she makes cuts, adds fabric, paint, and patches.

"It attracts different people. Someone that wouldn't care about art would still be like, oh that's cool!" She said the vest is one of the most popular garments.

Another quirky aspect of Ooh Baby! is the up-cycling of items. Many clothing items are reworked articles from brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, GAP, Adidas and more. Other up-cycled products are Ignozzi's plastic water bottle Flower Power earrings, and she said she has different accessories in the works.

"The most I can say is that there are more," Ignozzi said. "We're in the laboratory!"

Crate and Barrel has big plans for its newly acquired boutique brand.

The home furnishing retailer announced its acquisition of Hudson Grace, a boutique home decor, entertaining and gift brand based in San Francisco. Founded in 2012, Hudson Grace is known for modern tabletop and entertaining essentials designed to evoke the coastal California lifestyle.

Crate and Barrel plans to grow the Hudson Grace brand through retail expansion into niche markets. With more than 47% of its sales coming through online channels, Crate and Barrel will also leverage its digital capabilities to grow the brand's developing e-commerce business. Future plans include the introduction of an edited Hudson Grace collection in select Crate and Barrel stores in time for the holidays.

Hudson Grace, which operates five California stores and one Atlanta store, will remain a standalone business offering intimate and highly specialized shopping experiences in small-format stores.
