Oceans are a sonic symphony. Sound is essential to the survival and prosperity of marine life.
But man-made ocean noise is threatening this fragile world. "Sonic Sea" is about protecting life in our waters from the destructive effects of oceanic noise pollution.

A panel discussion, moderated by Steven Katona, will follow the 60-minute documentary.
Acadia Senior College is sponsoring this event and offering the film to the community

Welcome New Board Members and Officers!
|
|
The Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday, June 5th at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor. Nat Fenton recognized and thanked outgoing board members Dan Poteet and Charles Stanhope. Nat also recognized retiring Curriculum Committee editor Larry Martin, and thanked him for his dedication as a committee member, former board member and long-time instructor.
Andy Cline reported on ASC's finances and was happy to convey that the college is fiscally sound. Jim Clunan presented the board candidates and nominations for officers. Members present elected four new board members and the slate of officers. The evening concluded with a potluck supper.

New Board Members
Candy Emlen was Director of Marketing & Sales for a small commuter airline in Pennsylvania before moving to Mount Desert Island in 1983. She and her husband Jay operated Mount Desert Travel for three years. In 1989 Candy began working for the Southwest Harbor Public Library as the Children's Librarian, and in 2002 she was promoted to Director. She retired in 2018, but continues to volunteer for the Library.
Michael Hastings graduated from Bowdoin College. He was a Congressional staff member for Representative and later Senator Bill Cohen and Senator George Mitchell through 1984, when he took a position to manage activities for Catholic Relief Services in Africa until 1991. Returning to Maine, he served as the director of an organization that promotes research on sustainable aquaculture, and was Director of Sponsored Programs at the University of Maine where he was also adjunct faculty in the Maine Business School. [Mike was previously appointed to finish out a vacant term, and formally elected to his first full term at the meeting.]
Sheila Kirby was a senior economist at RAND, a nonprofit think tank, for over 30 years. She served as a Senior Fellow at NORC at the University of Chicago from 2012 to 2017. Her two primary research fields were education and defense, publishing extensively in both of those areas. Sheila held a joint appointment as an adjunct professor of economics and public policy at the George Washington University where she taught at the graduate level for 25 years. She volunteers with the League of Women Voters and Friends in Action and enjoys hiking, reading, cooking, music, plays and telling stories to her grandchildren.
Jane Reynolds attended the University of Massachusetts where she received a BS in Nursing. She worked in many areas of health care before finally focusing on surgical nursing and later obtained an RN First Assistant Certification. Jane retired after 40 years of practice and moved to MDI with her husband, Jim, in 2001.

Rockland Field Trip Recap

Thirty-two ASC members enjoyed a visit to the Owls Head Transportation Museum and the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland. It was a gorgeous spring day, sunny and quite warm on the mid-coast, perfect for visiting museums and exploring this artsy little city...
