SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, November 14, 2019 regular meeting.
The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
- Recognition of National Merit Semifinalists
- Approval of a Resolution Calling for an Election on March 3, 2020 For the Purpose of Approving a General Obligation Bond

Congratulations to San Mateo High School student Alexis MacAvoy, the recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation award for Health Advancement in the 2019
Broadcom Foundation
Masters competition in Washington, D.C.
Alexis designed a water filter using carbon to remove heavy metals from water.

Aragon Takes Division II Volleyball Crown for Second Straight Year
Congratulations to the Aragon Girls Volleyball Team, for the second year in a row they have won the CCS Division II Championship.
The Lady Dons advanced to the CIF State Championships and they host Rocklin, the No. 2 seed in Division II, tonight at 6 p.m.

Hillsdale High Girls JV Water Polo Team Finishes Regular Season Undefeated
Congratulations to the Hillsdale JV Girls Water Polo Team for clinching the divisional first place spot with an undefeated season!!
With their 9-8 victory over Sequoia High School, the Lady Knights JV Water Polo Team went on to claim the #1 spot in the PAL standings with an impressive record of 10-0-2.
Congratulations to these 14 amazing young women and to Coach Jina Button and Assistant Coach Katie Bratt for this impressive performance!! Go Knights!!

Winner of the Drama Desk Award for Best Play, Noises Off is about a group of actors and their director, struggling to put on a silly British farce. We join these theatrical people at the final dress rehearsal, again a month later, and at the end of the show's run. We not only get to see their play hilariously deteriorate, we get to see their backstage antics and insecurities, their character flaws, and their attempts to sabotage the play and each other. Join the Mills community in this legendary play, called by the New York Times: "The
greatest farce ever written."

Capuchino Presents She Kills Monsters November 22-24
Capuchino Drama
's production of "She Kills Monsters," the story of Agnes Evans, a young woman grieving for her deceased sister. The Evans sisters never were especially close, but after Tilly's death Agnes resolves a notebook containing a game scenario created by her sister. She discovers that Tilly was well-known Dungeons and Dragons player, and that she was passionate about online fantasy gaming. In order to unlock more secrets about her mysterious young sibling, Agnes recruits a "dungeon master" named Chuck to help her understand and grieve Tilly. Chock-full of supermodel elves, dominatrix warrior women, and nasty ogres, She Kills Monsters is a surprisingly sweet tale of friendship, loss, and acceptance.

Calling All Student Designers
The San Mateo Union High School District is looking for innovative student graphic designers to create a new District logo. Students should consider the District's rich history and diverse schools in their design work.
Any student in the District can submit a logo for consideration. In addition to bragging rights and feeling an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment every time they see their logo on a business card or the side of a District vehicle, the student designing the winning logo will receive a $500 stipend for their work.
The deadline to submit a logo for consideration is December 13 at 4 p.m.

Aragon Students Host Shoe Drive
Aragon High School recently partnered with My New Red Shoes, to host a shoe drive. Since 2006, My New Red Shoes has worked to close the clothing gap for children and youth in-need through their Clothing for Confidence Program. Beyond providing the necessities of new shoes and clothing, they strive to create long-term impact by boosting self esteem and confidence, providing a sense of normalcy, increasing school attendance, engagement and readiness, and improving the overall educational experience and quality of life of our community's poorest students.
The shoe drive was organized by sisters
Rosella and Natalie Graham (pictured above) and Aragon juniors. The show drive collected more than 140 pairs of shoes.

Students Learn About Healthy Food Choices with the Help of the Stanford Teen Health Van Team
The
Stanford Teen Mobile Health Van, made possible through a grant funded by the Peninsula Health Care District, served 18 SMUHSD students this month. The van supported students with a number of services including vaccines, physical exams, nutrition counseling and more. All services were provided at no charge to students or their families.
In addition to the services mentioned above, Stanford Registered Dietitian Talya Kurzion was on hand for a presentation to our BRIDGE program students. She educated the students about healthy food choices and conducted a healthy smoothie demonstration. All food was donated by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley and information was sent home to families about the program and their services.

More than 100
members of the community joined Congresswoman Jackie Speier for a conversation about youth mental health on November 5 at Hillsdale High School. The event featured panelists including current and former District students, as well as SMUSHD Manager of Mental Health Services April Torres, Michelle Levine, Principal and Former Director of Counseling at St. Ignatius College Preparatory and Dr. Shashank V. Joshi, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Professor at Stanford University.
Panelists spoke about teen mental health, solutions, and available resources.

Students Invited to Apply for Climate Ambassadors Program

Applications are now open for a new yearlong leadership program for high school students in San Mateo County who are interested in learning about climate change and motivated to take action within their schools and community.
The Youth Climate Ambassadors (YCA) Leadership Program is offered by San Mateo County's Office of Education and Office of Sustainability, along with the Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame, which piloted the project; Peninsula Clean Energy; and the Youth Leadership Institute. Students who are in 9th, 10th or 11th grade as of January 2020 are eligible. The program will run from January through December 2020. The deadline for applications is Sunday, December 1.
The program will include retreats, monthly skill-building workshops, peer networking and mentorship. Students will develop and implement a community or school project that is designed around taking local action on climate change.
The Youth Climate Ambassadors will receive a stipend, and additional funds will be available for students who qualify for free and reduced lunches. Students who are part of the program can also apply for a mini-grant to support the implementation of their community or school impact project.

Focused and Winning with ADHD
Dr. Sarah Cheyette and Peter Johnson will give a talk on non-medication strategies that people with ADHD use to help themselves focus. Both speakers also have a lot of experience working with children.

2nd Annual Youth Advocacy Summit is Tuesday, November 19
San Mateo County Office of Education's Youth Advocacy and Social Summit (YAASS) aims to lead, inform, engage, and inspire all students in San Mateo County to be inclusive and supportive of all students.
YAASS is an event organized to specifically to support the work of LGBTQ+ high school students and their allies In an effort to make all high schools safer and more inclusive.

Teen Short Story Contest - Submission Deadline is December 20
The Millbrae Library presents its
Teen Short Story Contest
and Young Adult Novelist Convention (YANovCon) on January 25, 2020.
Short Story Guidelines:
- Contest is open to 6-12th graders who reside in San Mateo County
- Submit your own original work of 500 words or less in any genre or style
- All submissions are due by December 20, 2019
Winners will be contacted on by January 11, 2020 and will be offered the opportunity to read their stories publicly at YANovCon.
