walking the walk
All Souls is proud to be a sponsor for this year's Colorado Springs Pridefest and March. The event runs Saturday and Sunday, 7/13-14. We will have a booth at the Pridefest in America the Beautiful Park both days and will be participating in the parade on Sunday morning. The Pridefest rules state that our tent must be staffed at all times that the festival is open (10am-6pm on Saturday, 7/13, and 10am-5pm Sunday, 7/14). With this in mind, we need lots of volunteers to occupy the booth during those times as well as people to carry our new banner during the parade on Sunday. Note that we need two crews during the parade, one to march and the other to staff the booth during that time. To sign up for the ASUUC tent at Pridefest, use the Signup Genius here. For a parade marching spot (Sunday), click here. The more people we have, the less each person has to put in. Walk the walk with us and support the Social Justice Action Team in this activity.

7/11, 6-7:30 pm, at Poor Richard's Downtown, " SURJ COS Book Club: White Fragility."  WhiteFragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo
In this "vital, necessary, and beautiful book" (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and "allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people' (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.
