Letter from the President
|
|
As I enter my seventh month as Chairman of the Alamo Area Hospitality Association (AAHA), I take a moment to pause and celebrate Independence Day. Although many may not technically revel in what occurred in 1776 or possible even know the historical value of the declaration, I am curious what the day and weekend means to you and what will you do to celebrate?
Mark Tassler
at KXRB Radio states that 88 percent of Americans surveyed plan on celebrating the fourth and he makes mention that retailers know this, and are well stocked with everything from flags to burgers. According to his survey from 2017, the top five things Americans plan to do are:
1.
66 percent plan on taking part in a cookout or picnic, spending an average of $73.42 per person on just food items,
2.
65 percent of consumers already own a U.S. flag and plan on displaying it
|
|
|
3.
53 percent own patriotic-themed apparel such as T-shirts, bathing suits or shoes and plan on wearing them
4.
44 percent of Americans will attend a fireworks show or community celebration
5.
14 percent will watch a parade
Not too many people simply stay home because there are 32.9 million Americans saying they are going to head out of town (Tassler, 2017).
Brett & Kate McKay (2019)
have these traditions listed on their
website
along with some recipes for ice cream and root beer.
1.
Hang the Flag
2.
Go to a Parade
3.
Make Some Ice Cream
4.
Hit the Fireworks Stands
5.
Go See a Blockbuster Movie
6.
Make Some Root Beer
7.
Have a Block Party
8.
Light Up the Grill
9.
Blow Stuff Up
10.
Watch Some Fireworks
Lists like these are always a bit funny as for some reason, we do not all fit the prescribed traditions and or plans for the day or weekend. I personally have not done all of these things mentioned above in a given year. I have not made homemade ice cream or root beer…but it sounds good. Oddly enough, when I searched for Independence Day in late June, the first several references were about the 1996 movie with Wil Smith and not about what transpired in 1776. Regardless of your perspective and views about history an independence, the fourth is a federal holiday and extended weekend that, we get to spend time with family and friends. Enjoy your time – however you plan to spend it and safe travels if you will be on the road.
In closing, I send special thoughts to my son, Caleb who is celebrating his 16
th
birthday this month. Plan to join AAHA for the upcoming events in July. Follow us on Facebook to keep up with the
AAHA Social Calendar
. Two events are taking place this month at Dave & Buster’s Crossroads location with Melvin Adams and an after-hours mixer at Floore’s Country Store.
Make sure you register!
