Members in the News
Recently several members of the PA No-Till Alliance have been featured in national news media, demonstrating that the efforts of your Alliance are being noticed beyond the borders of Pennsylvania. Here are highlights of three recent articles:
SchrackFarms_DairyHerd
Featured on the cover of the most recent issue of Dairy Herd Management was board member Jim Harbach of Strack Farms near Loganton, PA. The farm, owned by Jim and his brother-in-law Kevin Shrack, was recently honored as the 2018 Innovative Dairy Farmer of the Year by International Dairy Foods Association and Dairy Herd Management. The article largely focuses on Jim’s efforts to build sustainable soils by utilizing no-till and cover crops.  Read entire article .

Not to be out done, the work of board member Leroy Bupp in “ Healing the Soil Through No-Till, Focusing on Boosting Organic Matter” was featured in No-Till Farmer magazine. Over thirty years of no-tilling, cover cropping, planting green and spreading manure he has increased his soil organic matter nearly 2 ½ times to its current average of 4.8%. Finally, Alliance member Virgil Gutshall was interviewed for an article in No-Till Farmer featuring his innovative machine that seeds cover crops and injects hog manure in one pass, placing manure nutrients in the root zone in an environmentally responsible manner.

Virgil Gutshall Sr. and his son, Virgil Jr., worked with two equipment dealerships to assemble the unit, which was tested first on their farm and also at the North American Manure Expo in Chambersburg. Read entire article .
The Alliance Continues Efforts to Spread the Word on No-Till
An important part of fulfilling the No-Till Alliance mission is outreach to other farmers. It will continue those efforts this winter by co-sponsoring these events:

  • Farmer Soil Health Breakfast Meetings, co-sponsored with the Clinton County Conservation District, on February 3 and March 3. For more information contact Lisa Blazure at LBlazure@CintonCountyPA.com.

  • A Union County Soil Health Day on February 5, featuring the well-respected Brendon Rockey, co-sponsored with the Union County Conversation District. For more information contact Bill Deitrick at bdeitrick@unionco.org.

  • The Alliance will also help sponsor and have a display at the Western PA Regional Soil Health Workshop on March 8 in Butler, PA with Board member Leroy Bupp as a featured presenter. For more information contact Andy Gaver at 724-482-4800 ext. 3.

No-Till and Cover Crop Display at the Farm Show
As reported last month, the Alliance assisted with the installation of a nearly 5,000 sq ft conservation/ stewardship display at the recent Pennsylvania Farm Show. It was extremely well received and was toured personally by PA Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding, and PA Governor Tom Wolf, as well as Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Patrick McDonnell, a six member delegation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as numerous other policy makers and members of the public.

It was a great opportunity to showcase the benefits of no-till and cover cropping, and to demonstrate to the public that farmers work hard to do their part for the environment.
Thank You Alliance Sponsors
Each year, a number of sponsors step-up to partner with the Al liance in fulfilling our mission to promote the successful application of no-till through shared ideas, experiences, education, and new technology. Without their invaluable support, the Alliance would not be able to have the success it enjoys. We appreciate your support!
